Just won my very first MF lens on ebay. Planning to use it on my Nex 5. Problem is can anyone identify the mount for me and tell me what kind of adapter I need to make it work on my Nex? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum, kin2son.
The lens is a Helios-44M-4 58mm f2 Zenit Helios M42 Lens. You will need to get a M42 to NEX adapter. You will need to get the type that will push in the pin (flange) for the lens or else your aperture will always be at f2. _________________

Thanks for the quick reply my_photography! Are you able to link me where I can get such an adapter? I tried seaching on ebay and there are so many different types
I assume something like this won't work properly? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/M42-Lens-Sony-E-Mount-Adapter-NEX5-NEX-3-Adjustable-/120738803015?pt=UK_Photography_CameraLenses_Lens_caps_hoods_adaptors_ET&hash=item1c1c97ed47 |

Yes, that one from BigIs will work. You see the white ring that sort of comes out from the mount? It will push the pin from the rear of your Helios 44M-4 thus allowing you to use all aperture. _________________

Thanks again my_photography! Will order one of those then
On a sidenote, are you able to recommend any good and cheap wide MF lens? Something within the 24-40mm range? Thanks in advance |

First of all: Helios 44M-4 is a good lens, so you will have
lots of great fun with it.
Something wider, but not too expensive?
Well, I am very fond of my Mir 1B 2.8/37mm, which often can be found
brand new in its original er... er... er... canister (best word I could find for it).
Or how about a Meyer-Optik Orestegon 2.8/29mm? Usually not too
expensive either.
Search through MFlenses -- there are many good posts here. |

Have a look at Pantax's Super-Takumars & Super-Multi-Coated Takumars in M42, there are some good values in there, The 28/3.5 is nice, and will fit your new adapter.
A good source of information:
