I finally was able to find the 35mm full frame carrier for my beseler enlarger. The frame size is different only by a little more than a mm or so. I think it's 26x38. This obviously allows for the entire frame to be printed. What results is that if the print is left un-cropped light leaks beyond the edge of the negative frame creating a rough black border: http://www.flickr.com/groups/ishootfilm/discuss/72157626446776432/ (click that first link).

I quite like the "effect." That it shows the actual process, that it's REALLY from a darkroom.

Sorry, I'll get to my point.
Is there any reason, now that I have this carrier, to keep the normal one? If I want clean borders, I'll just use the easel. It doesn't seem like I'd lose anything...Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance!

No, you're not missing anything. I don't think I've ever had a neg carrier that wasn't filed out.

the light coming around the edges contributes a little flare and can reduce overall quality tonal quality of highlights especially. that's why carriers crop in a little. you're defeating a feature intended to give th ebest results. so I would never do that. why do you care that people think you used a darkroom? not worth the loss in tonal quality. the photographers that started this fad dont understand the subtleties of printing. even thinnest areas of negative have more density than bare film outside of negative. this means flare is added.
