Hello everybody. I'm new here, even though I've been reading this forum for years now. I'd like to show you my so-called "500mm f5 lens". It's a basic fast achromatic refractor on which I put a Baader filter to cut down some of the AC (which are evil without it).

The main inconvenient of this lens is its lack of resolution (and thus of overall sharpness). However I sometimes have the ability to take some nice shots..

What do you think?

I think new members like me aren't allowed to post pictures.. (antispam ?) Links works well in preview mode for me.. :s

Edit: I guess it's working now Smile

Edit2 : I forgot to mention that all my pictures are heavy crops, except the 4.

Looks good! I've seen much worse with dedicated tele lenses. I like Esp. 4 and 8 Smile
Could you tell us more about the lens? And which filter was used?

Thank you Smile

I'm using a Skywatcher 500/102 (so ~f5) achromatic refractor. It's connected via a T-2 mount on the DSLR. I also use extension tube to reach infinity. The scope not well corrected for CA. I felt bad the first time I used it, picture was all blueish. So I was offered a Baader Fringe Killer which is put betweeen the scope and the extension tube. I paid 200€ for the scope. I think the filter is about 50€.

You, of course, need a big tripod in order to reduce the vibrations..

Here is a picture of the system (without the filter, haven't received it at the time) :

(I don't use this tripod).

Here is another picture with TCx2 + ISO 6400 taken late in the evening:

i took the liberty of downloading and reprocessing your image

it's a matter of taste ... i like the picture but i didnt like the color cast so i applied the "b&w creative look 3" preset in lightroom

to my eyes, the picture takes a different turn Very Happy

As you say, it's a matter of taste and you're welcome to post any personal "review" of my pictures Smile

I found the "original" colours to be too "hard", that's why I put some effects in PP..

You make me remember of a disadvantage of using the Baader filter. As you cut most of the blue, the picture will appear greenish-yellowish, easily recoverable in PP.

I like Hari's edit, what it has done is boost the contrast and make the picture much more punchy.

I think this lens produces nice results - resolution isn't everything!

What do you guys think of this one?

I can't barely distinguish the rabbits.. what kind of PP do you propose?

to keep it close to reality, i'd give it an earth tone (usually, i dont like to spend more than 30 sec on pp), auto tone and then some vignetting to focus the attention to the center of the image thereby giving more focus to the rabbits and the fox(?)

like this ->
