I dont really know about any physical problems with mirror lenses on a Canon 5d mkII (i have an Olympus camera).
Also I have never used one, since i am waiting for one to come along at the right price and moment Very Happy .

Though on availability in europe, I guess either of these should be easiest to find:

- Tamron Adaptall SP model 55B or 55BB, seems generally well regarded, has close focus ability (1.7m or 1:3 close focus),
add a 2xTC and it will get you to 1:1.5 magnification even which, is quite close to real macro (though I do not know how good it will be for this).

- Old soviet/russian mirror lenses (MTO or Rubinar), I think MTO is generally well regarded, though I do not really know the specifics on these (like close focus etc), except that some can be big and heavy.

Depending on the state of the lens, type and market, I think in my country these will set you back for around 100 euros or less if you are patient and lucky Wink , else a bit more.

Maybe someone can add to this.

I have an MC Rubinar 8/500 Makro Mirror lens.

The minimum focusing distance is about 2 meters, hence the "makro" in the name
It's not an extraordinary performer, lacks a bit of contrast and sharpness, and it's quite difficult to focus, but with minimal PP it produces more than acceptable images, especially considering the 70 euros I paid for it.
From the samples i saw around I'd say that Tamrons look better in most of the cases - but it could also be that I'm not that good at shooting with it, since I don't use it often, and it clearly need some training to express itself at full potential.

You can also consider the samyang 500/6.3 which is more modern and lighter and cheap anyway: my astrophotographer friend is quite happy with it.

There should be a thread around where the use of mirror lenses for macro is discussed, and where you'll surely found more accurate info.

I second the recommendation of the Tamron SP 8/500. Excellent value!

My experience with many mirror lenses tells me the Russian-made ones usually represent the best value. In absolute terms, I like my Yashica ML Reflex 500/8 the most, but those sell for insane money.

The Tamron SP 500/8 is the best I have come across. The 3M 500/8 is nearly as sharp, but a lot bigger and heavier!

some months ago I was fortunate to pickup an as new SMC Tokina 500mm f8 with all the neutral density filters, lens caps, lens shade, and leather case for about $80.00 with shipping from a charity resale site. The lens has a Nikon mount which is a perfect fit on the D300 and with a Nikon to Canon lens adapter it works great on the 550D. On the Nikon the lens is equal to a 750mm and 800mm on the Canon because of the 1.5 & 1.6 crop factors. (based on a 35mm format)

One very important point to consider: Get the best, most rigid tripod you can afford because a little lens shake goes a long way to spoil a potentially great shot. A remote shutter release is also a plus. A mirror lens will test your patience and reward you appropriately.
