Is this lens frontlens focusing like the Rikenon 55mm 2.8 and otherwise comparable? Or is it a quite different lens?

I am not sure I understand what you are asking? I briefly Googled "front focusing" but I think it could be my error not the lens.
I can compare both lenses WO if you would like.
The Auto Rikenon focuses down to .9 the Auto Mamiya to .5.The Auto Rikenon is light while the Mamiya is very heavy. The Auto Rikenon has the manual settings to the right and the Auto settings to the left....ie turn the aperture to the right and it manually stops down, turn it to the left and you have the auto feature. The Mamiya has the usual A/M switch....also its front glass is set further back into the lens. _________________ Moira, Moderator

That means the lenses are very different.
When you focus with the Ricoh lens only the frontlens is moving, just like with most old folder lenses. That will be a reason that the MFD is 0.9m and not further nearby. Your description make clear that the Auto Rikenon is a much cheaper construction than the Mamiya, at least mechanical.
Did you compare their optical results?
Edited former post: I meant focusing with the frontlens only, sorry for being confusing. |

I will be waiting for better light to use the lenses in a shoot out...I am not technical so it will not be that precise..
Just on looks I still like the Rikenon! _________________ Moira, Moderator

Wat me makes somewhat curious is the quality in macro of this lenses, compared to Tessar 2.8 and Industar 3.5, both often appreciated.
But I have to confess, I am a bit lazy (and don't have much time for it) to make comparing test .
An I don't have the Mamiya |

This is as close as the Rikenon gets...
#1 WO at .9,it would not be worth cropping to see the lovely glow...
#2 WO I still like the softness
#3
#4 Stopped down 5.6 or a little higher..the colors are spot on.

I own this lens too.
As I also own Mamiya 1.4/55, 1.8/55 and 2/50 I had never tested the lens.
A few weeks ago I decided to take it with me and I must say I loved it.
(Click on images to open them on bigger resolution)
Unforunately on my first atempt using aperture 2.8 I noticed that there is halo around yellow objects.
After further tests I noticed that this halo is rare.
I managed to make it appear again on this photo (f/2.
It's not supersharp either ( 2.8 )
Closing the aperture the lens becomes better, much sharper and you notice that produce nice colors.
f/4
f/5.6
It's by far the worst of the standard Mamiya lenses.
But it's small light and somehow it makes you feel right using it. |

I have only one Mamiya lens, a 28/2.8 I bought at a flea market for peanuts, and had no great expectations on it, but it turned out to be one of my best lenses, probably my favourite.
I'd love to buy more, but they are not so common, and often not so cheap.
BTW, very nice shots, and very good performance by the lens _________________ C&C and editing of my pics are always welcome
