Canon EF film camera

Just got one of these a few weeks ago for a song, knowing that the electronic speeds didnt work (slow speeds), however do the batteries power anything else? I only ask as the shutter speed nor aperture windows in the finder do not move when I alter either of these on the lens or the shutter speed dial even tho speeds above 1 second are supposed to be mechanical. All else seems to be fine.
