Rare lenses : Petri 135mm f/2.8 M42

I found this lens to quiet rare and pretty good quality.

Petri lenses tend to be of poor building quality but can show a nice performance.

Kadlubek's lens catalogue estimates a price of € 45,-.

I got as a gift and I still have this lens, this copy quite good built quality not worst than any other Japanese lens from it's age. I guess this lens made after Petri had bankruptcy and any other Japanese vendor make it. I try to sell on Ebay but nobody want it seems this would be mine forever

Agree, no problem , this lens value of rarity only. Not better than we have already Jupiter-37 or CZJ etc.

i have read that petri's kuribayashi line was their higher quality lenses. i can vouch that they are not only good looking, but well built, and to my eye, they are very good performers. the focus ring tends to get stuck on these, but nothing a good CLA hasnt cured. i am presently having that done on the 135mm you see in the picture and will post pictures once thats completed.

i have had a hard time coomparing my 135mm Petri because I dont have anything else in that range except 2 very different old 42mms. Not fair to compare this to them

i did take some outdoors testshots today and well. I like the indoor shots much better.
I did take a shot of a pinetree outside my house and then swapped lenses for my (very different indeed) vivitar 75-250 by Komine and took the same shot using the same settings.
The petri was nowere close to the details that the Komine gave me but maybe this is not fair. However I have made some interesting and a little mysterious testshots closeup indoors with the Petri. Nothing I kept but I might take some more later on. Want to test it as a portrait lens. That might be interesting...

yes, i believe they are older, and thus i think there was a quality difference in the older lenses, both build and optical. the more new petris i understand really decreased in quality. and yes, they are m42 mount.

they are also pretty cheap when you find them--i managed a great deal on the 35 and the 50mm of $60usd for both. you just dont see them a lot, but i really recommend them.

This morning I found a Petri 135mm f/2.8 at a local flea market. Since it looked like a '60s or early '70s lens, and Petri had a decent reputation for its rangefinder lenses, I took it away for 20€.

It's different from the version pictured above: it's labeled C.C Auto, and the design seems older. It's a smallish metal bodied heavy lens, with a built-in hood. It feels very, very solidly built and focusing is really smooth, a bit like a Takumar.





From the couple quick shots I took here at home it seems pretty sharp wide open, a fact confirmed by the ease with which it can be focused in the viewfinder. They are in-camera jpg shot in a hurry, I'll try to do a few better when I have the time.

It looks like Petri sold two lines of M42 lenses -

The first group was preset lenses made by Kyoei (or at least the ones I have seen), from about 1958-1962 for the original Petri SLR.

The second group was in the 1970's when Petri gave up making its own cameras and ordered an M42 SLR from Cosina. This lens looks like it is from this time. I am guessing it may also be a product of Cosina.

Sometime later Cosina also made some PK cameras with the Petri name.

Apart from the CA it looks good to me. Nothing some PP won't fix.

I don't think earlier lenses like this one were made by Cosina: Petri had a decent line of fixed lens rangefinders, and was certainly capable of building its own lenses. Earlier models are much different from later ones, this one in particular is very heavy and is very well built, and has no resemblance I can detect to any Cosina made lens.

Even so, at this small size that's noticeable CA. I know, the 135 Pentacon I have has some CA in those conditions; strangely the 200mm is much better.

I bought this lens from a flea market today near mint (slightly oily aperture blades) with both caps and case. I like the way the lens feels and looks, to me it seems really sturdy and well made. The "carbon fiber" grip looks very retro in a modern way, quite nice actually. The lens is about 92mm long without the retractable hood and 103mm with it. The outer diameter is 68mm. The lens is compact but it weights 530g. The coating is blue/purple. I think the lens takes 58mm filters since 55mm and 62mm did not fit, it has to be a size in between.
