A Praktica with Exakta mount Wink I like it , trustworthy metal shutter and compatible with VLC3 accessories, finder for example.

I had one and quite liked it, the metering prism was designed by someone who was quite an optimist!

The problem with the RTL is that Pentacon never really carried through its development: only a few lenses were made with the internal iris actuator (which is actually placed outside the bayonet mount). Although my example had the scarce Pancolar lens I sold it, and at a profit as well.

For compatibility reason, an extension piece for the secondary shutter release was available to allow the "outrigger" lenses to be used, retaining iris automation.

Hope the Exakta is more reliable for you than any of the Prakticas of that age I've owned, I've had a dozen of them, they all broke, film wind mechanism is junk, shutter breaks too, I still have an LTL and an MTL, both jammed, just kept them for display purposes. There aren't too many MTLs around that aren't jammed, and I think that Exakta is basically an MTL.

I've just bought a near-mint Praktica BCA, an all-black one, which I still consider the prettiest 35mm SLR around, I got it because I have a load of PB mount Pentacon lenses I want to use. Just praying the BCA is more reliable than the earlier Prakticas I've owned.

If you need any parts for your Exakta anytime, I have a second jammed MTL sat here I would happily strip the parts from for you.

You had a bad luck really I have dozen of Praktica bodies , due lenses were sold ,most of them in working condition without any trouble.

I have forgotten how many Prakticas and Zenit's have broken on me, I have a broekn Zenit E in my drawer as well as a broken Praktica MTL, a broken Contaflex and two broken Zenit-3s...

Out of them all, it's the Zenit-3s I would love to have repaired, the rest I have only kept for sentimental value, I keep thinking I should throw them out as I have no room left but I stop myself every time...

BTW, How much would it cost, roughly to have one good, fully working and refurbished Zenit-3 made from two broken ones, I'd also like to have it modified to have an M42 mount instead of the M39 with M42 register, I just really like the size and feel of the Zenit-3, feels so much more ergonomic than the agricultural and angular Zenit-E!

Sometimes it is funny to use a camera that is absolute out of any kind of ergonomy, as it is at least reliable. Zenit E or Exakta Varex. You are forced to take your time for each picture and think about what you do.
Might be I should look out for an Exakta Real to use some Exakta mount lenses. I didn't know that the viewfinders are compatible with my Praktica VLC2!

Which camera touch your heart is pretty subjective right, this RTL-1000 did reach mine what many others don't. Not too pretty , but works like a charm and convincer I never thought before.


Ian, problem is if anybody build a well maintenance Zenit to you, there is no guarantee it will be broken again. I bought at least 5-6 pcs for it's lens. All was broken. I have a repair man here who able to fix to you a good one , but cost will not worth it. Shipping on both way around 20 GBP, his fee around 30 GBP ~ 50 GBP my estimation for lowest cost.

I used a praktica MTL 5 for 25 years or so. Never a problem. I gifr ir to my son in low. And he uses the cam a lot.

I wanted a working shutter behind my Exakta mount lenses without pinholes.
Found a working Exakta RTL 1000 (well,most of it works - the selftimer/long shuttertimes goes, but doesn't touch the shutter). Reasonable price, I think € 35 for body, metering prism, Oreston 50mm 1.8 and preset Raynox 135mm 2.8.
Does anyone know if alkaline batteries can work correctly in the metering prism as it has a bidge in the metering system against voltage differences? Original battery was ofcourse PX625 mercury Sad .
Ugly thing with the metering prism on top IMO, but I can change for Praktica VLC finders and a handheld lightmeter Smile

The extension was not with the camera, I think I have to make one from a cable release. Does anyone know the correct length?

Usually I shift ISO value and works, like if film is ISO100 and I have alkaline battery instead of mercury I calibrate light meter with an external light meter or with an other camera with ISO shifting to ISO 25 for example. I don't have experience with this prism.

After some fiddling even the selftimer works properly again! Wasn't used for too long, I think.
Works great now.
Still need to know the length of the coupling for external aperture of older Exakta lenses! Somebody?
