Hi

Now spring is arriving here too (doesn't look like it though because had maybe 5cm of new snow this morning) so I sold my precious Canon 80-200 2.8L my last AF lens in a hope for some bigger tele lens.

Had to do it because I needed funding for the big MF lens Very Happy
The lens is: Canon FD 800 5.6L (EOS converted)

Some information about the lens:
http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/canon/fdresources/fdlenses/6800mm.htm

Will post images of the lens and shots taken with it when I get it.

That's a big un! What are you planning to shoot with it?

Man, that's huge.
Did your order a tripod and a gimbal head?

Birds & other animals and some events too. No need to be so close to take the action Smile
Also moonshots will be better. I think I need 1.4x and 2x teleconverters too Very Happy

Tripod I have which could hold but I really need a gimbal head to make it really usable & stable so going to buy that too.

I have watched his pictures. He has quite many of those nice FD lenses Shocked
What I also know is weather can also affect sharpness a lot. Air can make it's own problems too if taking shots far away.
Getting best results what the lens can give is not possible always and to get good results needs practice a lot.

I've been thinking about selling my last AF lens (Canon 85mm f/1.Cool to swap it for either the Samyang 35mm or 85mm, but I'm a little hesitant as kind of like having AF sometimes.

Look forward your results! Friend of mine did work 7 yrs to National Geographic to make photos from all local animals , he never could afford similar long lens and he did work on slides , every mistake had serious price. He did use Nikon 300mm f2.8 handheld in wild, sometimes he did wait 3 weeks for perfect shoots (he made friendship with animals Smile ) sometimes it did take this long.

Film time if you fail you loose money because film is not cheap. Not so easy task back then to work.
Cannot just shoot and take the best shots without worries about bad images.
I might go to Kenya and maybe Tanzania too next winter but I don't think I will carry 800 5.6 lens there. Difficult to go with it to airplanes. So much I would love to be in 4x4 with that lens and shoot animals further away Very Happy

I think I just take wide standard and Nikkor 200/2 + 2X extender to make it 400/4(for more reach when needed). Should be ok with them maybe.

Congrats on the 800mm lens.

I never regret having gotten an 800mm lens (Nikon 800/5.6) some years ago. I use the 800 for astroimages -- small DSOs, the moon, and even Jupiter and Mars. It's pretty big and heavy for casual walkaround use, though.

I wonder if the Canon 800 FD is sharper than the Nikon? With the Nikon, the fine detail on the moon and Jupiter seems to be best at around f/8, with the 4.3 micron pixels of a Canon t2i/550D. When I tried a 2x tele-extender on Mars (with no liveview focusing), results were bad.

Note: My forum avatar pic (M22) was taken with the 800.

If you ever need a rear cap for it, Nex would be a great one.

PostPosted: Fri Apr 13, 2012 9:13 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

What?? It's EOS converted so it needs an EOS cap.

PostPosted: Fri Apr 13, 2012 9:41 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

No, I agree with Fermy, stick on a Nex on it for fun!!!

PostPosted: Fri Apr 13, 2012 9:52 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

Oh, as that kind of 'cap' right, now it makes sense.

PostPosted: Fri Apr 13, 2012 10:09 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

Hehe, yeah, that kind of cap.

I saw a bit of sun today so I decided to test my lens to confirm it actually works.

Wide open f/5.6

click for 100% crop

Here another test. This was shot with 28mm wide angle from the place where the 800mm lens stands with tripod.
Our target is that brick building.

Here shot from the same place with the 800mm lens. Stopped down to f/8

click for 100% crop

These where just quick tests but I think that lens is quite good and not broken in transport Smile

More testing the FD 800 5.6L while I was watching horse racing today.
It was bad & cloudy weather so I had to shoot with quite high iso.
