Thank you! The sad look is due to some kind of oxidation that happened during the long period of not being in use. At least, the camera body and the optics of the lens itself were not affected.
Here are a couple of stopped down shots from today - f/4. As expected, the lens becomes quite sharp when stopped down (although it may not be very clear from these samples):
