What have you guys done to me ?? I was a old-school part-time pro photographer raised on a waist level finder, dektol for blood. Jumped on the digital bus, sold my film stuff. Now I am hooked on using manual focus lenses on my digital camera. Wife does not know this, but 2 more are on the way to the house,,,

I've found a way out of the dilemma: 1) as long as there are no gargantuan items, one bit looks more or less like any other to the wife... 2) QVC, HSN: these home shopping channels have a lot of nice-to-ugly fake jewlery which, once hooked, seems to occupy a wife's imagination to almost the same degree that lenses and cameras do us. Wink

Give it some time, and there will be the first 'rear cap' camera attached to a lens you wanted, and you will think: well, might as well run a roll of film through it and you will be back were you started Laughing

Don't buy anything bigger than a 50mm as they come in small boxes which can be passed of as other items, to many big boxes always raises questions. Very Happy

Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil [clangorous, evil laughter]

That has happened to anyone of us, so why not you as well. Wink

You are safe so long as you own no more than ten lenses. That is the threshold. You are doomed once your lens count exceeds that. But voices in your head will whisper, "Just one more Takumar, one more Zeiss, and the Tomioka 55 doesn't render like the Cosina 55..." and there you have it. Welcome to the beyond.

And don't keep them all together, by any means. Show no more than 2 or 3 at a time; that way she won't know the total number of items. Also, keeping all that metal and glass together in close proximity may cause gravitational collapse, and that could get very ugly!

You may as well face it, pappastratos, Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS for short) is a condition that has no cure, although it can be controlled if you're extraordinary dilligent -- or broke. Cool

When I first started hanging out here, I had just bought a Canon XS (1000D) DSLR. My first real digital camera. I had a small EOS outfit (an Elan IIe with four lenses, and an old Nikon outfit (F2 with a half-dozen lenses), and that was it. Then I discover this forum, and find out I can use my Nikkors on my EOS with an adapter. It's been downhill ever since. Now, almost exactly three years later, I have a wall of camera gear -- almost all of which is film cameras and manual focus lenses. 18 SLRs, one TLR, about a dozen vintage P&S and rangefinder cameras, and over 50 lenses. And I'm still lusting for more! More! MORE!!!

*pant*gasp*sigh* Give me a minute. I'm okay, I'm okay.

I think the best way to de-fuze a potential wife-hostility situation is the tactic a friend of mine used. He told his wife about EVERY single thing he bought, showed each one to her and said

"Well, I did well there- paid £ 10 [or sometimes 15, or 20] for it when it sells for £ 30 usually. If ever I sell it, I'll make a profit, eh?"

Of course, he had to keep the Good Lady well away from camera shops, and he NEVER took a photo magazine home with him Very Happy

I came a cropper the other night by leaving the MF lenses forum page open on my PC. Mrs said "You ain't looking for more lenses are you?"

My reply was "no I am just doing a bit of research on this lens." "Is that a new one?" Came back the reply. "Er! Yes, but you still have more shoes than I do lenses love, so don't worry."

She was not amused, so I promised her a pair of slippers for Christmas to clear the air. Don't say anything but if I had not bought the lens in question she would of got a pair of shoes for Christmas instead. Wink

Well, I did part ways with my Hasselblad to help out with property taxes. So it is OK to buy a few! I have my eye on a Russian lens. I think it is fun to buy these low cost (better than saying cheap) lenses ! Considering I spent $980 for a 50mm Hassy lens (15 years ago) & $700 for a 'L' lens for my Canon

My wife just called out from the living-room "what are you laughing at?".

Ron with only 38 lenses.

Yeah, I've used this tactic too, with mixed results. See, I used to buy and sell photo equipment for a living, and my wife was an active participant -- in sales, at least. So, when I give her the line about, "Well, I paid $20 for it, but it's worth $50, easy," she just says, "So, when are you gonna sell it?" Oops. Shocked

I have come to the conclusion that I have a great wife, she buys me things if they look interesting and are a good price or I have expressed an interest. I have been surprised with a Ricoh GX100 and an Oly EP-1, a Yashica TLR and various other film cameras.

I need to get me one of those! Naw, I'm happy.

Well I have only known about being able to use MF lenses on my DSLR for two or three months and my collection is at 12 lenses + two spotmatics and some developing equipment. I'm pretty well screwed aren't I? Embarassed

No domestic lens-buying disputes in my home. It's simple: I have zero discretionary income. If I want to buy something, I must sell something first. Whatever funds enter and leave my PayPal account are my own affair. As long as nothing shows up on a charge card statement, life is beautiful. Sometime a lens is even bought for me out of house funds. !No hay problemo!

The juice that pushes the purchases is LBA: yes, LENS BUYING ADRENALINE! The condition LBA is not a problem, need not nor can not be 'cured', and only ends upon death and/or dismemberment. I'm in no hurry.

I to suffer OCD (Optical Collectors Disorder)

When you start collecting C-mount's on an APS-C sensor as well as other lens is when you know for sure that there is no going back and life is good.

I'm guessing my collection is nearing 50...but wouldn't be surprised if I'm already there.

My wife is great....she has even tried to use the camera with a manual lens attached.
