Hello! Well I finally registered with the forum after browsing it for a few weeks. It seemed like a friendly, well informed bunch of people. I have recently bought a Tamron SP 500mm 55BB and have been trying it out. I will try to post some pics as soon as I can find out how to post them here. I think I must have caught the mirror bug 'cos I went ballistic and bought a ZM-6A which I will be trying to mount on my Canon 40D. By the way, any advice on fitting this will be welcome as I anticipate having to use a tele-extender to compensate for the flash overhang. Sorted pics, they are measured from google earth. Weather wasn't great but I ramped up the ISO. They were just to get a feel of the lens. I used a tripod and emote shutter release. House is 1.5 miles away; pole is 65 yards and robin about 20ft. I might have overcooked them a bit. I thought the lens did pretty well for a mirror and hope the next one will be better yet. Roll on the summer - when the rain is warmer.

Pictures show after your second post...it's an anti-spam measure. Welcome by the way!

Welcome Riever. The robin seems to a bit closer than your focus. Are these handheld? For critical focus liveview is a very useful tool. I am not a great fan of the typical out of focus rendering of mirror lenses, but I couldn't/didn't stop myself buying two of those last week, a 600mm f/8 Vivitar Solid Cat and a 250mm f/5.6 Minolta. I've got some more testing to do...

Thanks for the reply dickb. You are correct, the image looks a little different when I see it on screen. Over all I find the image soft but can't complain about the throw the lens has. I still need to play about with settings to see what would be best. The DoF is very lean closer up but not too bad when far out. This won't be news to you guys though. It is fun getting back to manual focusing but I could do with something to make it easier. I believe there are options to change the screens in the camera which might be worth pursuing. Again, any advice would be welcome. May I say how great it is to be able to share the marvelous images which are posted on these forums, it is most encouraging to see what can be done. BTW this is the first time ever that I have posted any pics on line and it was remarkably easy to do on this site. Jolly good, but be warned, y'all might have to suffer a spate of crappy photos from me.
