At last i was able to mount these to the Nex, after several weeks ago getting a 50mm and a 28mm Pentax lens in PK mount for £9.50 the pair.
So here are the very first shots from the lens.
Smooth focusing, very small and compact, feels pretty well built and very sharp from F4
Most of these are taken between F4 and F5.6
The SMC coating has an amazing colour and has to be one of the sexiest lens coatings i have seen

Very nice Eddie. I like the variety of wildlife in pic 3, did you notice the little fly?

The M1.7/50 definitely qualifies as one of the underdog lenses. I spent nearly half my lifetime using nothing else, then I put it away for a time while I've been buying more sexy lenses, but I've started using it again this year.

I'd love to see a shoot out between this lens and your Minolta 1.4/50 if you have time one day. I have a feeling the Pentax might win.

Peter, Yes it is a bit of an underdog and probably qualifies as one of my sharpest 50mm, I will do a shootout between the Minolta and the Pentax.
At F1.7 this lens produces a lot of glow, I think it would be an interesting shoot as per below
Konica 50mm F1.7, Chinon F1.7, Minolta F1.4 and the Pentax F1.7

Yes i noticed the fly i would like to say that i waited hours to take the shot but it just happened to be there when i got home

Fine demonstration, i like big size of photos when clicked but framing is kind of morbid.

I have always been a big fan of Pentax lenses, the SMC primes in particular. Your images demonstrate it perfectly Cool

I'm a Minolta fan, but I like what I see from this lens.I'd love to see a shootout between this lens and the Minolta.

As for sharpness it looks good, but what Post processing was done?

Walter g
P+P was done in aperture and all that was applied was.
Edge Sharpen
Intensity 0.81
edges 0.22
Falloff 0.69
Sharpen

intensity 0.5
radius 1.0
Border FX for the border
and exported at 50% of original in order to upload
Here is an image with no adjustments made at all straight jpg from camera

and here is the exact same image with the sharpen applied

Thank You. I've tried to stay away from Pentax lenses, because if I bought one I'd probably start collecting them But they are tempting.
I hope this isn't a LBA attack coming on. Very Happy

nice one! I love the samples!

Great samples of this lens. You have managed to get more of a 3d effect out of it than I could. Everyone should have one, they are very cheap and common.

Come on, Walter Smile I started with Pentax years ago and took to Minolta as well only recently, so you could do it the other way round. Just think of all those lovely Pentax lenses waiting for you to try! Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

I know if I buy one, I will probably wind up buying a dozen. Smile
It's just a matter of time.

Yes, I agree. I like my Pentax very much.

Thanks v m for sharing this experience and these images.

I have recently purchased a Panasonic G3 and I have exactly the same SMC 50 f1.7 lens to try when the adapter arrives.

You've got some really great images there.

may I ask which version of the f1.4/50 Minolta you are referring to, MD 49mm filter, MD 55mm filter or MC Rokkor-PF? ( may do a shootout too )

Andreas, I don't know which version Eddie has, apart from "Minolta Rokkor-X 50mm F1.4" in his signature. My own is the last MD version (MD III), with 49mm filter, orange distance scale and minimum aperture lock.

Its the 55mm Filter thread in MD

PostPosted: Thu Oct 06, 2011 12:45 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

I believe that the M1.7/50 will have a hard time to stand up against the Minolta Rokkor-X 50mm F1.4 = the MD with the 55mm filter, but I am very curious, and may throw a MC-Rokkor-PG 1.4/50 and some versions of Takumar 1.4/50 into the comparison as well. However often I do 'fast and dirty' comparisons just for myself which won't be presentable nor stand up to the scrutiny of you guys, but if I have the time to come with anything I can dare to share I certainly will ( and it will be on a NEX5 )
