Hello everyone,

I recently purchased another Nikon 50mm f1.4 ais lens. The lens looks like new with no scratches on body, lenses or mount. The only problem is that the focusing seems to be a little dry/stiff. I was just wondering if anyone knew of a good CLA service provider on this board or elsewhere who deals with Nikon lenses?

Thanks in advance
Rand

I know only here at Hungary, shipping cost around 40 USD to both way and labour cost also. 80-100 USD all cost what you have to pay.

Thanks you very much Attila,

I am here in the United States and I was hoping to find someone on this board or elsewhere here in the United States, I am sorry I should have stated this originally. Recently, On Nikon's website, I located many authorized repair service centers within 100 or so miles away from me. I am not for sure If they simply repair Nikon lenses that are still under warranty or if they also service older lenses.

A lot of the Nikonians we used to have here seem to have disappeared. Patrickh has Nikons, you could try a PM to him.

Another one I remember in USA who I'm sure could help you is Seymore (real name Chris Moore). He's an avid Nikonian.
MooreFoto@gmail.com

Or you could ask on a Nikon forum or even the Classic Camera Repair Forum

Thank you Peteqd for your time and the info you provided,

I will give Chris a try.

BTW,

Why do think most of the "Nikonians", as you have described them, have dissappeared from this board?

I have two similar lenses, though mine are non-AI. Both disassemble differently, but are not tricky to take apart and reassemble if you're gusty enough. With many old lenses that have sticky, tough, or dry focusing, I'll use rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip and run that on the helicoid (even if I can only see a small part of the helicoid.) Combined with repeated movement, that de-gums the thick grease nicely.

Good, send him my best wishes and tell him Peter in the other forum sent you! Smile

Well, by Nikonians I really mean photographers who use nothing else but Nikon gear. We do have still have several of those, many who use Nikon cameras, and a host of members with Nikon MF lenses.

I would imagine they drifted away mainly because there's only very few lenses other than Nikons that can be used on a Nikon camera. Another one I can think of is ChrisLilly

Chris (Seymore) might still be a member here but I haven't seen him for a long while. He's still very active in the other MF Forum, plus a few other Nikonians I expect.

David,

I sincerely thought about trying to do it myself , but this is a pristine copy of the Nikon 50mm f1.4 ais. I mean the paint, the lenses, and the body look like it just came out of a new box. I got it for $149+ shipping on Ebay. I couldn't believe what I saw when I opened the box it came in, I expected scratched lenses, multiple paint loss and really stiff focusing ring, but what I got was a really well cared for lens.

The focusing was slightly stiff and dry, It would be ok if I used it as it is but I will use it in conjunction with an Anamorphic lens. So the focus ring needs to be smoother and be able to support the torque and Weight of the anamorphic lens over time.

Example videos:
http://vimeo.com/21371442( Nikon 50mm f1.4 ais (previous owned one), Canon 7D, and Kowa 2X anamorphic for bell and howell)
http://vimeo.com/28287180 ( Nikon 85mm F2.0 Ais, Panasonic GH1, and Kowa 2X anamorphic for bell and howell)

Visualopsins,

I forgot about KEH in Georgia ! Thank you very much for letting me know and for the Link.

Peterqd,

I have gone from Contax Zeiss to Olympus Zuiko and finally have settled on Nikon Ais lenses. I think I "have" become a "Nikonian". I had a Canon 7D, and a Panasonic GH1, which was "Hacked"( Use of Altered firmware to add higher recording bitrates and camera funtions). I have now moved to Nikon everything, a Nikon D7000 DSLR (waiting for Nikon D300S or D700 replacements) and all Nikon lenses( Ais especially). I just love the way Nikon lenses render images and their mechanical build and focus quality.

I recently sent him an email, still waiting on a response, However if or when he contacts me I will let him know that you referred him to me and that you send your best wishes. Thanks again

It depends upon your point of view I suppose, but the glass is not completely empty.

What about ...

Zeiss ZF
Cosina-Voigtlaender
Samyang
Tamron Adaptall
Tokina
Sigma
Vivitar
Arsenal/Arsat

(all available in Nikon Ai mount)

FSU "A-mount" and T-2 lenses

Contax with Leitax conversion
Leica with Leitax conversion

Medium format lenses such as Pentacon 6, Kiev 88, Mamiya ...

... and you can use M42 lenses with an optical adapter - if you want to.

For more affluent users there's the Coastal Optics 60mm f/4 UV-VIS-IR APO macro.

John, perhaps you can give an explanation why we have fewer Nikon users here than we used to. That was the original question, not which lenses will fit Nikon cameras.

Send t to Essex camera in NJ. Never have failed me.
Post back and forth will be cheap and I'm sure their rates are as good as any.
Google for contact info.

Hi Peter. I have an idea - but it's just that - an idea. If you wish I'll tell you what it is. I'll respond here if you like. Or maybe you would like to open another thread - in a hiddden section perhaps if you don't want the world to see it.

Well you started it ....there's only very few lenses other than Nikons that can be used on a Nikon camera. I happen to disagree. If I'm not allowed to do that then you've just lost another Nikon user.

Thanks F16SUNSHINE,

I was going to first call around within my area to try to get quotes and find out about turn around time for repairs, but I will try contacting Essex Camera as well based on your recommendation. Thank you again.

Sichko,

I think what Peterqd was trying to explain to me was that guys who are avid Nikon users and buyers will only use Nikon lenses. Because there might not be many Nikon lenses based lens discussion threads, they have kind of faded away. Unlike Peterqd who has multiple lenses from multiple lens manufacturers, whom can discuss multiple lenses in multiple threads based on his experience with them. "Hardcore" Nikon users and buyers may only want to discuss Nikon lenses and nothing else.
