I have an early zebra version (single-coated I think) and a very late all-black version with green and yellow numbers. I can't see any difference in IQ.

Try to look for a serial number that starts with 79XX or 78XX as these are the latest versions of the 44M-2 and most likely u will get a copy in a good shape.

?? He said 44-2, not 44M-2, I guess he means the preset version. My 44-2 (preset) serial is 81xxxx.

If you're buying off Ebay then look for a European seller, there were a lot of Zenits sold with this lens in Britain and the rest of Europe. I have two of both the 44-2 and 44M and haven't paid more that £5 ( UK Pound ) for any of them.
The best of my 44-2 is the oldest ( lowest serial number ) and most worn - but it's silky smooth, the best looking one is stiff, but they are both optically good, it's a great lens.

You may find interesant to look for the serial N° that begin with some Zeros. That should minds that this was a copy for an important person (perhaps a better IQ control??).

Another interesant lens is the 44-3 MC, but with the series begin with 9xxx. If begin with 8xx should not focus to infinity.

Good luck.

I never saw a copy of the chrome M 39 Helios.

I like to have one.

Rino.

I picked up a "00" Helios 2/58 with bright knurls for $15au..it looks like it has taken a beating but the focus is smooth and the aperture works well.I buy for using not for the looks... Laughing If you are patient enough you will get what you are looking for. I chose to look for the "00" Helios because of the rumour they may be the "better" Helios to get.....if the lens is cheap enough buy and try it.
