Hi folks

Been looking for a 28-70 and 70-210 zoom to make up a 2-lens shooting kit for those times when I can only take my smallest setup with me.

I found a well used but still nicely working Rolleinar MC 4/80-200 which is a good one judging by the samples on this forum.

Obviously it's in QBM mount. I know it's possible to convert this lens to other mounts, but would like some details/experiences from others before I take the power tools to it!

So how do I go about converting this lens to either M42 or Canon EF?

That's a really nice lens!

You can use an QBM-EOS adapter.
There are some that work well.

BTW, if someone is interested in buying such a lens, I might sell mine.
(Sorry for hijacking!)

Hi Lucis

More than happy for you to hjack as it was your recommendation and the fruit on the bench shot that made me buy this one.

I think I would prefer to convert it to M42 so I can use it on my NEX too, any idea what register the QBM mount it?

It's 44,70 mm.
M42 is 45,50 mm.

So, it won't be easy to convert it to M42.

EOS is 44mm, so you can use an adapter which is 0,7mm thick and it works.

Thanks for that info, I'll sort it out soon, got a few other sonversion/remounting projects on the go, been hacksawing and filing bits of metal all day!

Conversion is a last step if you love really photography and care about gears. EOS adapter available for QBM and EOS adapter available to NEX, this is right path in my opinion. Conversion if professionally done and full reversible perfectly ok like an adapter, but most conversion just ruin lenses and ruined lenses not really get any attention by people.

I might get a QBM-EOS adapter, depends how much they cost, I can't see me buying any other QBM mount lenses and if the adapter costs more than the lens it doesn't make financial sense to me to buy one.

I only convert lenses I'm going to use and keep, therefore it doesn't matter to me if the resale value is ruined, I just want to use them.

I have at least two lens based on this logic , ruined one Angenieux 25mm f0.95 DIY converted with huge damage on front, silly owner bought for chips now it's value more than 1000 USD. One other even worst a pre-war Tessar lens I saw only my copy , owner also didn't care and made DIY Exakta conversion. I still believe these lenses are valuable things and we should not ruin them because current price level are cheap.

Another examples mumies in Egypt , people used in stream machines , because was plenty available basically free. This was stupid from our perspective 100 yrs after. I think same about lenses gears, we should preserve them in best shape what we can for next generation, this is a real goal of this site.

My next camera hopefully is going to be a Sony Nex. I also like a 2 lens shootiing kit.

For me for the Nex it would be the Minolta 35-70 3.5 and the 70-210 f4.
Why shoot the rest when you can shoot the best. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

My thoughts too Walter, not about the Minoltas but about picking the best I can find at a price I can afford. The Rolleinar should cover the long end, not sure what shorter lens I will pick, something like a Tamron 35-70 perhaps, it all depends what I can find, I am in no hurry however, I already have a ton of not so good zooms so I want to make sure I only buy a really good one now.

I'm looking for a matched set, that's why I'm going with the Minolta 35-70 3.5 and the 70-210 f4.
Performance wise the Minolta 35-70 3.5 is hard to beat for the price. It was also sold as the Leitz Vario Elmar 35-70 3.5.

I'll keep my eye out for the Minoltas, I had the 70-210 'beer can' in Minolta AF mount many years ago and it was so good I never bothered with any primes longer than 50mm because that big fat zoom covered the same range and I didn't feel I was missing anything in IQ. Never owned the 35-70 'mini beer can' though. Wish I still had that lens!

The only Minolta MD 35-70 I can see on ebay is a 3.5 35-70, is this the one you speak of?

If you're looking for a Tamron in that range, I would choose the SP 35-80mm f2.8-3.8 - a stellar performer imho!

If the Rollei is as good as the Vario-Sonnar 80-200/4, then it will be much better than the beercan.

Interesting. I don't know what the Rollei is, I read somewhere it was made by Mamiya. If it is a vario-sonnar I'll be happy as a porcine in faeces.

I have my eye on a Pentax-A 35-70, anyone got any experience with that lens?

Another Rolleinar would be nice but never seen one in the 28-70 or 35-70 range.

I did some googling and according to this page, this lens was made by Tokina:

http://www.markerink.org/WJM/HTML/rollmami.txt

Quote:

Manufactured by Tokina:
5.6/400 Tokina (also as the Voigtlander Color Dynarex AR)
8/500 Tokina Mirror Lens (also as the Voigtlander Reflex Dynar AR)
4/28-85 Tokina Zoom Objective (also as the Voigtlander Vario-Skoparex AR)
3.5-4.3/35-105 Tokina SMZ Zoom (also as the Voigtlander Vario-Dynar-AR Macro)
4/80-200 Tokina Zoom (also as the Voigtlander Vario-Dynar AR)
4-5.6/50-250 Tokina Zoom AT-X
2.8/80-200 Tokina Zoom AT-X

Looking at that list, I'd like to find the 4/28-85 to match my 4/80-200, maybe I can find the Tokina badged version?
