Congratulations - that looks to be in fine shape, they sure are pretty!

The lens is threaded for Series VI, by the way, so getting filters and shades is simple and low cost.

I'll post as soon as I can my impressions as well as some photos. A post not long ago included the phrase "almost as sharp as a Kodak medalist". This peaked my interest. My first film experience was with a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye. Great photos but not so user friendly as far as different lighting went. Got some good photos and many many under exposed and movement blurred ones. Still and all the photos that were good were sharp and 50-60 years later holding up well.

I'm trying to build my retirement kit so I'll have something to do with my time once I do retire. That is about 4 years away so now is the time to accumulate my toys before the money dries up. LOL

LOL -- indeed! I'm selling a house to fund my retirement equipment Rolling Eyes

FWIW here's what Mark Hansen says about the Medalist / Medalist II:

Quote:
These are just about the top camera ever made by Kodak in the US. Big, heavy, well made, with the high end five element Ektar; this camera is no pretender, it will out live all of us, and keep taking great pictures. My lens resolving test have show that the 100mm f:3.5 Ektar will resolve 320-325 line pairs per millimeter! that is as good as any lens I have ever come across and puts it into a class with the 85mm f:2 Sonnar, and the 75mm f:3.5 Planar fitted to the Rolleiflex line of cameras.

These cameras take 6x9 cm images on 620 film with auto shutter cocking, and exposure spacing. The lens is coupled to a range finder of the split image type, and retract for easy storage. Images are composed with the use of a telescopic finder, that has auto parallax correction. On the model I the camera has a fine focus knob, and self timer, fitted to the Kodak Supermatic B-400 shutter. On the II model, the timer has been replaced with a flash retard, and is "X" synched at all speeds. These cameras have some coffin corners about them, least of which is, that they are prone to jamming when the shutter is cocked when the lens is retracted. However when handled properly, they are truly awesome cameras. Expect to pay at least 450 dollars to have the camera completely gone through.

I hope mine doesn't need any work done on it!!1 I don't know if I want to spend 450 dollars for a refurbish!! Glad to know it isn't as fragile as the retna reflex SLR's.

I think the $ 450 is indication for a completely refurbished Medalist, purchase included!?

Mark's price seems high.

Bald Mountain is the king of Medalist conversions:
http://www.baldmtn.com/Convert.htm

He wants $345 for just the conversion (but it retains 'all functions' and includes prism cleaning and adjustment), or $475 if you want the shutter CLA'd at the same time. $185 for just the shutter CLA.

This might be the way to go......

"To adjust only the feed side to accept 120 spools but not change the take up side or provide any other work the cost is $120"

Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Shocked Embarassed with all this 620 talk, I did something I swore I'd never do again... Click here to see on Ebay Kodak Monitor Special.

I swear, it was just sitting there unbid like that, at least 1/3 the going price, and has one of them EKTAR SPECIAL f/4.5 101mm lenses (4 element Tessar design, unlike the Heliar design in the Medalist)... and auto frame stop. Jeez. At least there's hope for 1/2 120 conversion by myself, with these.

Kodak Ektar f/3.5 100mm used on the Medalist, f/3.7 105mm, f/4.5 101mm, f/4.7 127mm - 1941 by Nesster, on Flickr

Nail clipper fix also works well on my Vigilant, so probably also on the Monitors.

That is a nice lens/shutter to remove from the folder to use on a Speed Graphic too, if you can grab a cheap body with no lens. Its got X-sync. And because of the front cell bit, you may be able to use it for Veijo's variable soft focus trick on a DSLR.

Congrats, BD, you and Jussi should start a Medalist club here. Wink

Have you ordered some of that expensive respooled film? Looking forward
to your results!

I planned on ordering some this afternoon after I get back from the car show in Ardmore. I'm going to use the 50mm flek and the Pentax 645 there today.

Take lots of pictures, I can't make the show as Saturdays are busy at
work and Ardmore is too far a drive to break away for an hour.

Shot 2 rolls. One color and one B&W. Hot Hot Hot!!! Sweaty by the time I finished. LOL Don't know how good they are till I get them processed. I need more inserts to use doing these kinds of affairs. They weigh almost nothing and are soooo fast to reload and keep shooting. Now to send them off to http://www.120processing.com/ to process then scan to digital on my new scanner. Then we will see how well I shot the show!! Laughing Laughing

Looking forward to seeing these, BD! 9 bucks a roll...what's the turnaround
on that? Think I'll stick with Wallies for 84c and the two week wait. You
should try it at least one time. Go into any Wallies, don't talk to anybody,
just go to the counter where they send off film, fill in the envelope, check
the box for special instructions, write C41 120 film, process only, plunk the
film in the envelope and drop it in the slot. Wait two weeks Smile

I will do that Bill. The turn around for 120 Processing.com is one week. I pay in advance through PayPal and print the order form from their web site. From the time I mail it till it gets back (CD and negatives) is exactly one week. Very friendly and easy to talk to folks there.

Kodak made a sheet film back for the Medalist too. Very hard to find though.

Not now but in the future I may try the sheet film on it. They made so many of these but time probably has taken it's toll on them too. May find the sheet film backs are too rare.
