Hi,

I am lucker most of the time in the forum. I have Nikon body with AFS300mm f/4, TCEII 1.4 and 1.7. I get satisfactory result with 1.4 but not with 1.7. Without breaking the bank, which manual lens should I get for 400~500 and above. I don't mind manual but I want to get same IQ as AFS300mm f/4.

Thanks

The 300/4 AFS is a marvelous lens, you don't say whether or not you are using a full frame or crop camera, have you considered giving the newer Nikon TC-20E III a try, may be worth popping along to your local camera shop to try one out.

Hi Wilco,

nice to see you here. Have you seen the samples with the Leica MR-Telyt-R 8/500mm mirror ?

BTW Have sent you a PM. Have a CZ Planar 1.4/50mm for you here on my desk.

Wink

Then obviously when you upgrade you'll 'lose' the extra length provided with the crop factor so worth bearing that in mind when considering what to buy, you could look out for a Takumar 500 but they don't come around that often. I'd try the newer tc route if I were you, when I used nikon I had the 300/4 on a D3, I used the kenko 1.5 tc on it with no bother, think you'll struggle to beat the iq of your lens on the cheap but someone may come along to suggest something.
good luck
John

To be honest, long lenses are where quality has improved in recent years. You are likely to see CA with older long lenses and lower resolution, and even vignetting. That said, you would probably find a newer manual Nikon lens at a better price than the AF versions.
