I just picked up a vivitar 20 3.8, and even though it's in MD (minolta Mount), the thing has an A/M switch (an M42 characteristics), and I know for sure they also made this lens in M42 mount. but it seems to me like they glued the mount on because there's no screw and I have no way of removing it...
Any one knows about this type of things? |

If you could post some pictures of the particular lens ,you will get faster and quicker results.
I have one in M42, and has the A/M switch-
Now this was in ebay in MD mount, and has no A/M switch

There were M42-Minolta adapters. These usually permitted an M42 lens to work in manual aperture mode on a Minolta.
Does the Minolta mount have an operating rod ?
If no, what you have is most likely an M42 with that Minolta adapter. This might have been screwed on very tightly.
Can you see the glue, or any screws ?
Pictures would be best of course. _________________ I like Pentax DSLR's, Exaktas, M42 bodies of all kinds, strange and cheap Japanese lenses, and am dabbling in medium format/Speed Graphic work. |

Looks like an adapter screwed on an M42 lens.
The M42 pin seems to be there, and there is no Minolta operating rod.
It may be on very tight, but dollars to donuts you can screw it off.
Try a bit of Wd40, and then tap it a few times. _________________ I like Pentax DSLR's, Exaktas, M42 bodies of all kinds, strange and cheap Japanese lenses, and am dabbling in medium format/Speed Graphic work. |

+1 .Luis is right thats a M42 lens. good luck.-
I think it may glued on ,after checking it with a minolta mount I have-the throat looks too narrow to accommodate the m42. Some solvent like isopropyl might help loosen it up. I have used heat sparingly to break glue before and it works- from a heat gun, hair dryer. Unless of course if the person adapting it used screws creatively where you cannot see it,the md mount on that lens seems thick enough to be able to do something like that. _________________ kathmandu

oh boy i tried using a clamp and almost broke the mount lol, it still wouldn't budge, i think the previous owner used super glue or something... for now it'll just be an MD lens... i'll just use it with the NEX till one of these days when i'm really pissed off i'll saw off the dam mount and glue an alpha mount on lol. |

You should cut the Minolta adapter with small electric saw on one side. Then you will be able unscrew it. You'll be left with beauty mark and that's it. Great lens, i sold it but regret the decision. _________________ ---------------------------------

woot it came off, just as we all suspected/knew, it's definitely an M42.
i was like, ok let's give it 1 more try, and it came right off (using a wrench lol).
put it on my sony alpha with an M42 adapter... took a few test shot, not bad, but MF on the tiny viewfinder of my A330 was no joke (already know since i own a few M42). and on a crop sensor this is actually not as wide as my kit lens .
on 2nd note, if they ever come out with a full frame NEX or PEN we'll all be golden with our lenses haha.
here it is mounted on my sony.... oh yeah i use an umbrella holder as a mini tripod haha. |
