Here are some more Radionar shots, studies in a way, my attempts to take photos which look nice when printed on Fine Art paper.
A Meadow. Note espeacially the OOF leaf highlights on the upper left:
The Mysteries of a Forest Path - a somewhat busy picture, but more and more details emerge on closer inspection:

A Dead Pine Branch on Fortress Hill:
The same shot after some Local Contrast Enhancement (done before downsampling). This kind of effect would be quite difficult to achieve with a normal lens and PP:

I have shot with a Radionar from a folder - 10.5cm f/4.5 triplet with front cell focus. Even wide open I don't get results like this. _________________ I like Pentax DSLR's, Exaktas, M42 bodies of all kinds, strange and cheap Japanese lenses, and am dabbling in medium format/Speed Graphic work. |

The lens is OK, but I'm using it in a way which increases spherical aberration - a lot. This is the only simple way to get a decent bokeh. Besides, I'm not doing much "facsimile" photography these days - except sometimes for documentation or just for playing with my more technically perfect lenses or just to show that I do have a choice and am making a conscious choice.
Except for the inherently somewhat lower contrast of the uncoated Radionar, I'm more or less in control of the degree of "badness" -- especially with some PP as can be seen from the "dead branch" photo pair. Due to the high amount of spherical aberration, it is much easier to use various sharpening methods to obtain very "graphical" results without fear of excessive sharpening artefacts.

The trick is, I'm using the front cell just to adjust spherical aberration and focusing either with a variable close-up ring (a helicoid) or a macro bellows.
At least with my Radionar, the bokeh is very neutral with a completely flat circle of confusion when the front cell is set at infinity and more and more Gaussian when set to shorter and shorter distances. I've also removed the small infinity stop screw so that I can set the front cell to even shorter distances (almost another round without fear of the front cell dropping off) so that only the central peak of the Gaussian is left - these photos show the result. So I have rather complete control of bokeh at the expense of spherical aberration - or, ignoring the bokeh effect, reasonable control of the amount of "glow" especially with the help of some PP local contrast enhancement, which mostly affects the in-focus areas of an image.
