That's fantastic! As a collection, Takumar m42s are definitely one of the more rewarding sets to have. For an average person (not super rich), I think you can get closer to a "complete set" than almost any other lens collector out there. There are clear progressions/advancements in the lines (Super to S-M-C to SMC), they're all pretty well documented, and there's nothing 100% out of reach. Obviously there are some more rare & expensive ones but even those seem to show up from time to time. I picked the wrong team when I started to go for Soviet stuff. SO many weird, rare transitional and prototype pieces. |

Yes,is easy to see where I stopped. Maybe main reason is budget now, but I had the S-M-C Takumar 300mm f4 (I sold it) and I wasn't happy at all because of the very very strong CA. I know, it can be eliminated in PS, but...
I think 400mm, 500mm, etc are the same. |

You are right, Takumars are unbelievable, very addictive. I start with one a few years ago,by accident, a very good deal on a S-M-C Tak 85mm 1.8. Here I am now
Yes, I have a few missing, very rare and expensive, but for now....I can't touch them
There are a few collectors here with more complete collections.
I almost bought a few Soviet lenses a few months ago, I was curious to try the swirl bokeh and compare to my Taks but...I resisted the temptation. |

Your collection is impressive.
I have "only" 9 Takumars and 3 Pentax K . I started buying in 1969! I am thinking about buying a 85 mm . I hesitate between SMC 1.8 and ST 1.9 , the SMC 1.9 being extremely rare. What is your opinion on both ?
Which one do you prefer betweem SMC 105 and SMC 120 ?
Thanks |

Thanks
I wish I was around in 1969 , maybe I could get some rare early Takumars
If you can, go for S-M-C 85 1.8 ( was my first lens ! nice way to start, it was almost free ! ), you will not regret !
S Tak 85 1.9 is not bad ( similar to Auto Tak 85 1.8, see my picture here). I have the S-M-C 85 1.9 and I have a test 1.8 vs 1.9, I'll upload it here.
I like both 105 and 120. You'll find cheaper and easier the 105. If you want and if helps you, I'll shoot a test to compare them. Just let me know.
so here is S-M-C Takumar 85 mm 1.8 vs S-M-C Takumar 85 mm 1.9
My impression: 1.8 wins, better bokeh and sharper

Thanks Lucius,
I think I'll go for the 85 1.8 . I want a 85mm with a Takumar rendition.
About the 120mm , it is more a question of curiosity as I have already the 105 mm ( 1971 ) and I would be interested if it they had a different character. |

The S-M-C 1:1.9/85 is just like the Super-Tak 1:1.9/85, but with S-M-C coatings. The lens has quite different character from the S-M-C 1:1.8/85! It is softer wide open. The S-M-C 1:1.8/85 is sharp from wide open; has different optical formula...I sold my Super 1:1.9/85 and S-M-C 1:1.9/85, keeping the S-M-C 1:1.8/85.
The S-M-C 1:2.8/120 is quite different from any other Takumar imho -- especially designed for portrait photography, it has pleasing softness wide open -- not too soft. The lens is very sharp from wide open imho, but at wide open there is more "air" -- sorry, I don't know how else to describe... Quite different lens from 1:2.8/105! _________________ ☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮ like attracts like! ☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮

I think I understand what do you mean. My 105mm is not as sharp at 2.8 as at f4 but the rendiiton is stable. The bokeh is progressive and stays contrasty. |

500/4
I kept also 50/4 Macro-Takumar (1:1) & 100/4 SMC Macro-Takumar; I sold the S-M-C Bellows & Auto Bellows II...
Limited to keeping only 5 lenses list becomes: 35/2, 50/1.4, 85/1.8, 135/2.5 (II), & SMC Macro 100/4. |
I'm curious how is 500/4? strong CA like 300/4 ? |

Very, very nice collection. Oddly, I do not have a single Tak. Early on, I bought a 3.5/28 and didn't like it. I'm thinking that experience tainted me for future purchases. I believe in any line of lenses, some stand out as special. Besides the 1.8/85, what would you consider to be those special ones? _________________ Regards,
