I was wondering if anyone has any experience with these.
Can they be useful? Experiences....

Thank you.

Maybe you are talking about the accessory rangefinders - the ones which you clip in the flash shoe?
I have 2 of those: in meters and in feet - quite useful if you have a camera without a rangefinder.

I was talking about the ones built into the camera, but uncoupled.
I edited the subject to make it more clear.
Which clip on ones do you use?

I think i never actually owned such camera which will have uncoupled rangefinder - i guess you just measure the distance and dial it on the lens.

The clip-ons i have are Watameter - German made.
Easy to calibrate distance with a small wheel, and looks very sexy Smile

Has to be better than guessing, I think. And if it doesn't make the camera significantly larger, then why not. I have a folder without a rangefinder and often wish it had one, especially for portraits.

I have a few uncoupled rangefinder folders. I have no problem with them, you use the little wheel on the rangefinder until the images merge, then read the distance and transfer it to the lens. The marking on the lens and rangefinder are identical making it more accurate.

You can buy clip on rangefinders, they fit on the accessory shoe and work in exactly the same way. Rangefinders come calibrated in feet or metres, sometimes both. The distance markings vary and are not always exactly the same as the lens. But near enough and DOF will take care of any inaccuracies.
