Does anyone know if the front lens group is the same with all the M42 mount 50mm Takumars? The reason I ask is I have an S-M-C version with fungus in the rear element that I can't get to (screws to get the rear mount off just wont budge). I got the front elements taken apart and completely cleaned.
Today I bought one of the 8 element original Super taks and that has me wondering if I should swap out the front element for the multicoated version and make a Super-Awesome Takumar
Anyone know if there's any problem with this? Would there be any advantage other than flare resistance? |

Hello, maybe ?
The two have different formulae, so that would be like putting a diesel engine instead of a gas one, without changing everything around. The only solution would be taht the front groups are strictly identical. They seem to have the same shape, you can try but I don't guarantee anything... _________________ Cameras : Canon 5D, Pentax K100D, Pentax 6x7, Spotmatic

If you have already tried very thin oil and heat, I suggest you just drill the heads out. If you have a donor lens for more major surgery then you have some spare screws also |

If it's non destructive then I can't see any harm in trying. Maybe you'll get some interesting results or maybe it'll look awful. |

Well based on my initial testings I'm not sure if it will work. They are clearly different actual focal lengths. The 8 element is slightly wider. A couple other notes:
- 8 element is a more neutral color tone. The S-M-C is warmer which I like in some cases and not in others.
- 8 element looks a little sharper at f1.4
- Bokeh seems about the same. 8 element may be slightly more pleasing.
- 8 element hits the mirror at infinity on my 5DII, S-M-C does not. Sadly, I put a small scratch on the rear element.
- 8 element is brighter
Here's just some random comparison pics with crops. Resizing only, no adjustments or sharpening.

My 8 elements S.T. had very low contrast and was very prone to flare. At F/1,4 was so-so performer. And from F/2 the SMC 1,4 is a better lens in all the items (resolution power, contrast).
At 1,4 the 8 elements, had strong flare, that degraded the IQ.
With film, the 8 elements isn't so warm, and it can be good. With digital it isn't important.
Of course, that is only my experience and taste.
