someone was wondering about the corner performance of the Pen-F wide angle lenses, so I did a fast and dirty test shot series with the G.Zuiko Auto-W 20mm f3.5, G.Zuiko Auto-W 25mm f2.8 and E.Zuiko Auto-W 25mm f4 lenses on Sony NEX5N
file names explain lens and aperture used
first the 20mm f3.5, followed by the 25mm f2.8 and the 25mm f4, series from wide open to f4, f5.6, f8 and f11
no editing but slight exposure correction on some
the wide open and f8 samples are followed by edited version, these have 'cor' for 'corrected' in their file names

note: though I am grateful for anybody putting forward how tests should be done properly, please spare me, I won't even try to defend my quick and dirty test but still hope that they are of interest to some

Bravo! That's exactly the point. I'm not much into "lab-tests" any more. "Real" photography is what I want.
And if a test tells you what to want to know, it's perfectly alright, Andreas! _________________ Personal forum activity on pause every now and again (due to job obligations)!

+!, Andreas. Thank you for the informative test. Any of these wides look like great performers to me.
"Real world" tests are the best - especially with digital cameras. Given a group of very good lenses, even if we could pin down which was the absolute sharpest across the field, each and every one would probably be out-resolving the sensor anyway! And could we reproduce the test situation in most real-life applications?
Just as a reality check - take a look at the incredible photographs made by Galen Rowell in his book Mountain Light. Many of those jaw dropping photos were made with the 24 f/2.8 Nikkor or the Series E 75-150 Zoom! (Yes, I know he also used many other lenses, including the small 20mm f/4 Nikkor and the 35mm f/1.4 Nikkor, but he called the 24 f/2.8 "the most commonly used lens in my collection..")
Thanks again Andreas,

thank you very much Carsten and Paul for your kind comments!
and great to know that you find their performance to be rather good
the person who had instigated this test says that the performance of the wide angles is disappointing, specially the corners, and that they aren't at par with the f1.4/40 and f1.5/65. Well, that could be so, I find the f1.4/40 to be stellar and how much I would love to have the 65mm. However I also have been thinking that these wide angles aren't bad, actually even compare rather favorably to most legacy 24mm and 20mm lenses.
here my real 'real world' photos taken with these lenses,
the one I have used most, the f3.5/20mm: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kuuan/sets/72157628125919493/
some with the f2.8/25mm: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kuuan/sets/72157629419646160/
and the f4/25mm: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kuuan/sets/72157629897212327/
best greetings,

He should know that it is much easier to design a stellar "normal" lens than an excellent wide angle. _________________ Personal forum activity on pause every now and again (due to job obligations)!

yes, someone else and me too had said something similar in response too.

thank you very much Klaus, that I have been hoping
some samples taken with the 20mm now at the digital Gallery MF: http://forum.mflenses.com/g-zuiko-auto-w-20mm-f3-5-pen-f-halfframe-lens-t51076.html#1244312
and I completely had forgotten to mention, but I must:
my f3.5/20mm isn't perfect, see: http://forum.mflenses.com/internal-black-paint-in-lens-t51079.html
and the coating of the rear element of my f2.8/25mm is rather badly damaged, I believe that both faults, though not always, potentially influence IQ negatively!
best greetings,
