Scanning film service: does it exist?

Hi,
I'm digital since a couple of years only, all the rest was shot using film. When developing, I used to ask for a CD. As it was only as a complement (and as I had small PC-screen), I didn't bother too much with quality, but now that I can compare with digital pics, I really see the difference. Furthermore, I have films that weren't developed on CD (or I lost the CD). So, I'd like to get all my negs with today's standard.

Anyway, that's a lot of film and I don't want to invest in a dedicated scanner, not to mention the time it'll take to scan them all. So here's my question: are there providers that you can send negatives to and that scan them properly? with acceptable quality at least?

Thanks

Indeed but it can be expensive, I'm sure members here will know of places in France.
If you use film again some supermarkets (well in the UK) do quite a good job of developing and scan to CD for £3, another supermarket does Kodak Ultramax 400asa 36 exp for £1

You will want to ask at what megapixel amount the film is being scanned. One place here local to me does it for very cheap, but they only scan at 2.1 megapixels, so the images are really only good for 4x6 inch size or the 'net. I would recommend you get your images scanned at at least 5 megapixels. This will no-doubt cost more.

And once you find some prices, then you should probably do a cost-benefit analysis to see which way is cheaper: have someone else scan them or do it yourself, investing your time and money in the scanner and scanning.

Me, I decided to do it myself. But that is my nature. I always prefer to do things myself if it is at all possible.

Here's a place in California. I'll be trying them when I get through a roll of 120.

Clearly, I had a lot developed on CD in supermarkets and 2MP is the best I had. No, I clearly want more, 5 being the minimum, the problem is that the ones who develop films don't want to do it. I can guess it won't be cheap, it's long and manual work. But first let's see if it exists, then let's see the price.

TBaker: OK, that's what I'm looking for, thanks. Budget scan could be interesting...

cooltouch: cost-benefit comparison? well, that's exactly why I'm opening this thread Smile I'd add one parameter though: will I ever do film again?

Oh oh. Yes, I'm Smile I recycled my old EOS 300 SLR as compact & lightweight camera and tried it out with a bunch of film. Now, I'm looking for development + high-res scanning service (by high, I mean >5MP). OK, Norht Coast does it but I'm looking for something in Europe (or better Switzerland). I've found http://www.negatifplus.com in France that looks good, but not very cheap (precisely: acceptable service but high shipping costs). Do you have alternatives?

I know, buy a scanner. But hell, geeting it scanned while developed is definitely the most convenient Smile
