I recently obtained a Sears 28/2.8,1:4 macro on eBay. My first shot with it was @ 1:4 of a flower in the house @ f11 & I thought it looked decent.
However, when I shot outdoors I found the images from f2.8 up to f5.6 to be from very soft to soft. Quite disappointing! I decided to test it against my Vivitar 28/2.8, (Bauer made) with a test chart shot from a distance of 0.7M. Here are the results:
Sears @ f4
Vivitar @ f4
Sears @f8
Vivitar @f8
The two lenses get closer in IQ @ f8. Here is a side-by-side top right crop @ f8 with the Sears on the left.
