Hi --

Yes -- this is the younger brother of FD 35-105 f3.5 - it's a monster with constant aperture

The FD 35-105 f3.5-4.5 is lighter version and was next generation with aspherical element and it seems to be great..

I just received the parcel today - the lens is in MINT condition and I bought it for spares Shocked but ....

looking at samples taken just holding the lens on the camera I am quite impressed ..

just two snaps and their crops

all pictures wide open (f3.5 or something higher when zooming)

taken with 5DMkII - pp LightRoom

1 - ISO 400 - 70 mm ish

1 - crop

2 - ISO - 35 mm

2 - crop...

Wow, not bad at all! Looks like you need to dust your flowers, though. Cool

I have the 35-105 f/3.5, and I've always admired it for its sharpness, contrast and just general clarity. How would you compare the variable aperture lens to the old f/3.5?

Quite impressive as a zoom lens, though it has aspherical element.

thanks for all comments!

I was looking at the 35-105 f3.5 'monster' but I gave it up ..

@ Michael - I have not got the 35-105 f3.5 (older version) I can not compare both but looking at this one - it''s really light and performs pretty well! So, the previous version must be even better! (?)

@ - Koji -- yes -- I didn't know that but mir.com claim it has aspherical element and it seems to be true --

@ - Attila - thanks! Smile

The lens itself has distortions at both ends very noticeable - otherwise - hmm - it's good one!

After seeing Stan's shots in the above, I found one cheap same lens (yes,
nFD 35-105 F3.5-4.5 ASPHERICAL) on eBay. I clicked the BIN button,
since it was only $41 because of dented filter ring (more then one place).

Those distortions are software fixable, it is not too heavy (345g according to
Canon museum). But its MFD is 1.2m which is a bugger! (sorry for a bad word Embarassed )

I will use with NEX5, so distortions are a little tamed on APS-C sensor.

wow! congrats Koji!

I am looking for your samples on NEX!

what a quick decision -- I think it was a good idea to get this lens ...

Canon really mastered their zooms and long teles

Excellent samples, will you convert it?

Hi Graham -- I am pretty sure that yes..

The initial idea was having the lens for fun, eventually using a bits from it but now ...

the lens is so light and simple and really shiny - especially the rear glasses ..

The Canon Lens Museum info also says it. This zoom is almost half the weight -345g - of the constant aperture 35-105 - 600g and also has filter size of 58mm as opposed to 72mm for the constant aperture one.

http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/camera/lens/nfd/data/zoom/nfd_35~105_35~45.html

If you do go to this url and if you want to see where the aspherical element is click on "block diagram."

I have received the lens today from U.S.A.

Simple tests show that the lens is fairly sharp.

The upper left corner is 100% crop of CN tower's observation area,
the shot was hand-held, 105mm, f3.5 and close to infinity setting with NEX.
The other silly test shots are here > http://www.pbase.com/kkawakami/canon_fd_35_105mm_f35_45_aspherical

Due to (a) aspherical element?, the lens performs well near and far.
Canon says this is the first lens which incorporates aspherical element
at least as a consumer lens. The filter ring is also made of plastic, so
ding damage is ugly but optically does not affect badly I think.

wow! That's pretty cool perfromer

I mean the ASPH element surely can improve optical performance of the lens but there must be something more in that lens!

I love it .

Koji - thanks for samples on NEX
