takumars 85 mm. Which?

All of us know that there are some takumars 85 mm. ST 1,8; 1,9 SMC 1,9 and 1,8.

I watched some tests about them. I didn't see that the ST 1,9 was sharpest one, but a lot of takumars users prefer this over the more sharp 85s.

Does anybody know why? IQ cuestion?

I have the S-M-C Takumar 1.8/85 and the Auto-Takumar 1.8/85, and can confirm that the later version is considerably sharper than its older sibling. This does not necessarily make it any better than the Auto-Takumar, which has a real 'old-school' way of rendering, but the S-M-C has consistently delivered higher quality results for me.

There are others who own most/all versions, they'll be better placed to guide you, but this is my personal experience of the AOC 85mm lenses Wink

You have a comparison here, along with a Helios 40 85/1.5. The 85/1.9 have the same formula as the Auto 85/1.8, but with 6 blades instead of 9, so maybe a better flare controle but worst bokeh stopped down. The first version of the 85mms has the smoothest bokeh, the S-M-C 85/1.8 is the sharpest. I 'haven't used the 83/1.9 enough yet to compare it to the other.

The 85/1.9 has the reputation of giving something special to portraits.
But this is just hearsay. I have never tested it.
There exists also an 83/1.9 Takumar with 7 elements.

Don't know where you're going to put yourself Rino, but I personally reside in the Obsessives Insane Asylum when it comes to Takumars and AOCo equipment Laughing

I just have a S-M-C 85/1.8, an Auto Takumar 85/1.8, and two Takumar 83/1.9. During a small period I had two Auto Taks. That's not too much, that's just the minimum with that we can live Very Happy

My son-in-low has the S-M-C 2,5/135. Another wow takumar lens.

From the more modern family of lenses, my favourite Takumars are the S-M-C 1.8/85, followed by the S-M-C 2.5/135 (I & II), with the S-M-C 2.8/105 and 2.8/120 as runners-up. Yes, the 1.4/50 and 1.8/55 lenses are really great, but the performancce of these telephotos is something special, in my humble opinion.

They are greats lenses, endeed.

Difficult to chose among: 2,8/105, 1,8/85 and 2,5/135. I don't know the rendering of the 120 mm.

My very subjective order is

1) SMC
2) Super
3) Auto

Difference is little all are good lenses.

It seems that the SMC is the best for all.

possibly 'SMC is best for all' could be said about Takumars generally,
an earlier Takumars may be doing something in particular

Hi Andreas.

It seems that the older takumars have one special touch in bokeh. Not in contrast. And the SMC, generally better than the S.T., have the edger in contrast and resolving power.

I'm very afortunate with the SMC 2,8/105 that I have because YOU. (I can never say thanks enough times).

Here, in Argentina, u$s 520 is = to near of three months of average salary.

Yes, Pickles, not your problem, I only put un the table the reality of my country. Because that here we think very well before to buy a lens.

that's quite a handful
the f1.9/83mm sell for even more, don't they?
CarbonR, Spotmatic, Mal, who ever has one, how do you like it?

so total there are 3 different designs, the f1.9/83, the Auto Tak 1.8/85 and S.T. 1.9/85, and the f1.8/85, right?
the S-M-C f1.8/85 being sharpest, the S.T. f1.9/85 less sharp but some consider better bokeh ( Auto Tak 1.8/85 is the same? ) and the 83mm should have special bokeh too, how about it's sharpness?

Am waiting for the 1.9/83 - hopefully not for much longer Wink

In date order, the 8Xmm variants are:

Asahi-Kogaku Takumar 1.9/83 (Asahiflex mount)
Takumar 1.9/83 (rare, if available)
Auto-Takumar 1.8/85
Super-Takumar 1.9/85
Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 1.9/85
Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 1.8/85

+1 this was my conclusion too based on several lenses, but have to say Super-Takumar is really close.

After have read some opinions in takumars lenses, except the 2/35, the old 8 elements 1,4/50 and the 3,5/28 almost no S.T. are chosen over the SMC (S-M-C) version.

Althought I heard and read some users in favor of the pre-set takumars.
