I'll be at my mother's place (2hr drive from here) tonight and the whole family will be there. I'll primarily take indoor (candid and non-candid) portraits (without flash and with bounce flash.) Last year, the Rokkor 1.4/50 was very good but a bit long for indoor. Please help me pick the lenses (for use on m4/3, the e-p1):

the 50mm

Rokkor 1.4/50
MD 1.4/50
Rokkor 1.7/50
MD 1.7/50
OM (serial 9xxxxx) 1.4/50
OM mij 1.8/50
Yashica ML 1.7/50
Hexanon 1.7/50
MD 2.0/50 (this is a sharp lens but a bit slow)
Yashica ML 2.0/50

The 35ish:
Pen F 1.8/38
Mir-24N 2.0/35 (this is one BIG lens)
Fujian c-mount 1.8/35

The 28ish:
Rokkor 2.0/28
Viv/Komine CF 2.0/28

Thanx

Pen F 1.8/38 sounds about the best bet for low light work on a 2x cropper Smile

Yeah, I'm leaning toward the Pen-F as well. I'll probably also bring a 50 with me. Any preference between: Rokkor, OM, Yashica and Hexanon?

At a recent family gathering, in a not-large house with not-bright light and no flash use, my Pentax K20D got best use with manual 24/2 and 85/2 and 16/2.8, and AF 50/1.4, in that order. Indoors with an APS-C sensor I favor wider or longer-faster lenses. In the backyard I'll pull out an AF 35-70 or 28-80, which also might see use in larger brighter indoor spaces like large halls. But indoors, wider is better for me. Your mileage may vary.

I'd say definitely take the widest you have. with your 4/3, even the 28 isn't wide.

My extended family (wife, daughter, mother, sister and brother-in-law and their kids), is getting together tonight for a few hours of food, drinks and merriment. Honestly, I plan to wimp out and take my 18-55 IS lens with my APS-C size camera. For the group shots, I'm sure I'll be glad to have the 18mm focal length. So my recommendation is, if you have the kit lens that normally comes with that body, take it too, just to be on the safe side.

Being used to 24x36 I'd say 35, which in 4/3 would be what, 17? Lacking that the 28 is left. You'll have to walk around a bit Smile but you'll hopefully find a way to make it go.

Cheers, M.

Unless the family wants the interruptions to do portraits, you might be better off "invisible". At such times I often abandon my MF lenses in favor of a quick AF zoom. I almost always choose my Minolta 35-105 as I have over the past few days. Candid opportunities don't last long enough for focusing.
