We had a very large fire a few years ago:

I went on a mission to shoot it from various locations on the perimeter

this was the view from my backyard at one point:

shot everything with a lumix superzoom

Simply stunning - especially the shot of the motorcycle.. Smile

The feeling of solidity in the smoke is amazing!

Bravo!

you are too kind, sir

the solidity was for real. I never knew much about fires before this. Those are "crown" fires, where temps hit 1500c 2 feet above the surface. As the fires approach an unburnt area all is dried and heated till it bursts often with no actual contact with flame.

The firefighters talk about "the beast" , meaning this almost supernatural stage. I've never seen anything like it before or since.

Ash fell like snow in the town several times, many evacuated. 60 minutes acutally did a story on it.

Lasted 3 weeks and nearly took out both the town and the ski resort.
