Just acquired a Canon FD 50 1.4 SSC for use with my EPL1, went out between rain showers for a few fall shots.

Nice shots...every one says the FD f1.4 is sharper than the FD f1.8 but it would be nice for someone to show the difference.

I shot a New FD 50/1.8 for years, never much seeing the point of having to pay all that extra money for about 2/3 a stop of light. I was certainly satisfied with that lens's sharpness. I think you'd be hard-pressed to see a difference between the two in terms of sharpness at Web resolutions.

Having said all that, though, the above 50/1.4 sure does a nice job. Reminds me -- now that I've finally reacquired a decent Canon FD kit, I still don't have a 50/1.4! I should get one, cuz now I'm more conscious of bokeh than I was back in the day, and the 1.4's bokeh are nicer than the 1.8's.

@ Michael

Hi Michael,

at German *bay the FD 1.4/50 are so cheap in the meantime, that there is no financal reason to buy a 1.8/50 version. If I remember correct I bought my version of the 1.4 in near unused condition for not more than 20,00 €.

Thank you all for nice comments. Its a very pleasing combination to shoot, and I was happy with the results, esp considering the price Very Happy

@Excalibur - It's not just the sharpness, but also the 8 bladed aperture which should render the oof areas a bit smoother.

I think that there isn't any normal lens shapest than the canon at F/1,4.

It seems to be more sharp than the zeiss.

Great lens !!!

Congrats.

Rino.

Maybe I should bid on one @ German eBay. The 50/1.4 SSC on US eBay is going for at least twice the above amount. The New FD 1.4 is somewhat less.

Do you think it's worth for a Canon 5D MkII ?
I think that FD to Eos adapters ruin the lenses quality because of the glass included in them. Is it legend or truth ?

Rino - thank you for your comments, i was rather pleased with the results at 1.4 as well.

Olivier - I can't say as to whether its worth it with an eos-fd adapter and if impacts the IQ, though some of those adapter vignette on full framer right? And really by the time you pay for the adapter with glass element and then the FD 50 1.4, you may as well just get a used EOS 50 1.4, the optical design has not changed much.

This is just confirmation of what I've known for a while about the FD 50mm F1.4 SSC. And your shots area very nice!!!!!

Remember, he's using the FD 50mm F1.4 SSC, not the FD 50mm F1.4
I have an FD 50mm F1.8, and I could do a comparison test of the two.

I did some tests for resolution, CA and contrast on about a dozen 50-58mm lenses a while back, and the FD 50mm F1.4 SSC blew most highly regarded Japanese lenses out of the water!!! (this includes SMC takumars, Nikon, Olympus, etc) The CA on this lens is practically non existent.

Just little behind the FD 50mm F1.4 SSC, was the Minolta MC Rokkor 58mm F1.4

As for "all that extra money", the difference in price between the FD 50mm F1.4 SSC, and the FD 50mm F1.8 is not much. I've seen the FD 50mm F1.4 SSC going on ebay for maybe $30-$50 USD.

What's the difference between the SSC and the new FD?

+1

I'm curious! other than the mount, why would choose one vs the other?

And how does it compare to the other affordable lenses (Rokkor, OM, Tak...)?

As I mentioned previously, the SSC is much superior to the OM (F1.4 & F1.Cool, and the Taks, and the Rokkors)

I may have to test the FD, FD SSC and the New FD side by side!!!! Very Happy

The New FD appears to be different (the front element is smaller and a different shape)

Thank you Hards.
Definitely not worth compared to an EF 1.4/50.

Now that get me interested! For FD->m4/3 adapter, is it the same for FD and FDn? I'm so confused about canon mount!

Thank you

PostPosted: Sun Oct 17, 2010 1:10 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

Both the FD & FDn will fit the FD -> m4/3 adapter, so there's no need to worry there.

The FD mount needs you to spin the breech lock yourself, while the FDn is sprung so that it spins itself to lock when it's positioned correctly.
