Yashinon DX 50mm f/1,7 on Canon 5D Mark II

After shooting a 5D and now 5D Mark II with AF lenses for four years I'm currently trying to get back into manual focus lenses (used to shoot b&w with a Minolta XD-5 a million years ago). And apparently I already made my first mistake: I've ordered a M42 adapter and a Yashinon 50mm 1/1,7 DX. Just to find out on the panoramaplanet.de list that the 50mm f/1,7 DX is not compatible with the original 5D due to the mirror hitting the rear element.

But!

On this list it also says that the 50mm f/1,4 DX is incompatible with the original 5D. However it seems to be compatible with the 5D Mark II (which I'm using as well) as you can see here:

So my questions are:

a) Does the rear element of the f/1,4 protrude more or less into the mirror box than the f/1,7 at infinity?
b) Is there a known max distance for the rear element to protrude into the mirror box (measuring from the flange)?
c) Is it safe to simply try out the 50 1,7 DX with the 5D II?

Any help would be appreciated a lot!

Dennis

Thanks for the heads up and the warm welcome. The link was actually to a flickr page which showed a photo taken with the Yashinon 50mm f/1,4 DX on a 5D Mark II. You can find a couple more there when searching for "Yashinon DX 5D". My point was that at lest this person is using the combo sucessfully and I was hoping that this might mean that the 50 f/1,7 DX will work on the 5D II as well.

Just to answer my own question: the lens arrived and it's indeed impossible to focus beyond 2m (it's hitting the mirror in the up position around 2m).

Yes, the downside of the 5D range. There is a list of in/compatible lenses made sticky at the top of this forum.

I'd suggest you check it out and add these lenses to it if they aren't there.
