Does anyone here who regularly uses dedicated flash units ( I'm a greenhorn with using flash ) have any experience with LED flash units for macro work ?
Or would a regular macro ring flash unit be a better but more expensive choice ?
Here's 2 options i'm thinking of.
First link does away with the need to have a threaded adapter for the lens filter thread

This one is a continuous 'on ' light, and not a flash

I like "real" Xenon ring flashes much better, as it allows to freeze the scene (much shorter exposure) and the quality of the light is much better (sunlight like). But these are more expensive of course... _________________ Klaus - Admin

In my experience ring flash/led lighting is flat, not great for textural detail, whereas side lighting shadows enhance the texture. Color balance with spectral light of LED can be a problem; the 'white' led is actually a light blue, but color varies even within a batch of 'identical' spec LEDs. _________________ ☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮ like attracts like! ☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮

Thanks guys - very helpful
I'm not good enough to warrant expensive flash units, so budget is the only way for me.
Next on the list will be a YN-467 then, i think
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120615679535&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
Then i'll think about what to do about lighting the subject - a ' permanent on ' light to attach to the flash, like the O ring flash, will be what i'd be looknig for, but i'm not sure if they come in any other flavour other than LED _________________ Dogs Trust + RSPB member |

It depends on whether or not you can control each side of the flash independently or not either by being able to turn one side off or varying the power by side. It also depends on what they are being used for. _________________ Pentax: K, H2, H3, S3, SV (late & early), SV black, Spot F, K2 chrome, K2 black, ME F, SuperProgram, 6x7, Auto 110, Asahiflex IIB late

Further reading suggests i may not need a YN-467, maybe a YN-460 would do.
It will all be done manually anyway, as my macro lens for bugs and such is an old Tamron SP 90 _________________ Dogs Trust + RSPB member |
