Hi,

bought this evening a brand new Nikon F5 (never used).
I have no experiences with Nikon (this will be my first one). Looking now for a zoom from 24/28 up to 85 or something else. Hopefully you have one or two recommendations (only Nikon lenses) for me.

Many thanks for your assistance.

Wink

Hello Rolf,

do you want to use AF-lenses with the F5?

The fast AF-Nikon 2.8 zooms get high marks from the users. I can't comment on these since I never had one of it. They are quiete expensive and way to big (for me).

I am using a Nikkor AF-S 3.5-4,5/24-85mm as my bread and butter lens. It is out of production now but is not to rare on the used market.
The lens is small, sharp and the AF is very fast. The only weak point might be the distortion.

If you are looking for manual lenses the Nikkor 3.5/28-50mm is a real gem and my favourite lens for the F3.

Hi Ianus,

many thanks for your post. I´m looking for an AF lens (I own some MF lenses which I could use Cool ). Read somewhere that the 12-24 should be a very good lens and the best in this league. Perhaps I´m looking for 2 lenses, maybe this one and then from 35 to 105 etc.

I think you are speaking of the well regarded AF-S 2.8/14-24mm which is the wide-angle reference lens from Nikon. You won't find anything as good and as expensive in Nikon mount in this region.

Yes, seems not a cheap lens. Approx. 1600,00 € is a word. Rolling Eyes

Well, you certainly picked a high-end body to start with. Congratulations!

I don't know what price range you are looking at and if AF or MF is preference. 1st advice: don't buy ANY Nikkor lens that is designated DX (for example the suggested 12-24/4G AF-S) - they are designed for crop frame Nikon DSLRs and won't cover the full image frame on your film SLR Nikon F5.

The 14-24/2.8G AF-S mentioned is certainly The reference wide-angle but I'd like to recommend Nikkors less expensive for you (I've bolded my personal choice for a starter-kit that gives professional quality at affordable price).

20/2.8D AF, I think sells for EUR 300
24/2.8 Ai-S, I think sells for EUR 220
24/2.8D AF, I think sells for EUR 275
35/2D AF, price from EUR 170-250

50/1.4 Ai-S, price from EUR 100-160
50/1.2 Ai-S, I think sells for EUR 330-400

85/1.8N, price from EUR 200-260
85/1.4 Ai-S, I think sells for about EUR 500

105/2.5 Ai, price from EUR 110-170

135/2.8F, sells for EUR 30 (unconverted) or EUR 70 (Ai-converted)
135/3.5 Ai, price from EUR 70-100

Vilhelms list 1+

for people beeing new to Nikon it is helpful to open these 2 links while searching for a lens:
all makes, lens groups, hoods, coatings etc by serial no - so you see what you buy:

http://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/lenses.html#28-xx

test of a professional Nikon guru with evaluation if its better on film ,digital or digital full frame:

http://www.naturfotograf.com/index2.html

Go through this and you avoid buying the wrong 28, 35 or 85, they´re all named more or less the same , but not always the same quality

Hi,

thanks all for your comments.

The first lens I bought yesterday at my local dealer was a

Nikon AF Nikkor 2.8-4/24-85 D

as an every day lens. Can use this lens if I should (maybe) buy in the future a digital body.

there is an adapter that allow to use it on eos body
it is a better lens than actual Canon wide and some people use it in manual focus on eos

Thank you Poilu for this info. Actually I own the EF 16-35mmL II which is not too bad too.

As you can read in the post before I will start with a every day lens. The F5 was not a real bargain but the price was so good that I tought to try it out. After the first few rolls of film I will know whether it was a good idea or not.
This is the first Nikon in my life - so no experience with handling, feeling etc.

But I´m sure that the cam will make a good job. Cool

I was lucky to try some Leica without damage, my empty pockets surely helped a lot

One beauty of the Nikon system is the wealth of old lenses that can be bought for relatively little money. I have Nikkor 20mm, 35mm, 50mm (2), 135mm, 200mm (2), 35-200mm, 80-200mm (2) lenses purchased for less than $90 each. So with careful buying, your system shouldn't bankrupt you!

Wonderful stuff, the everyday lens seems a good performer and the first shot is particularly good IMHO. Could you share what scanner and pp was involved? I am particularly interested as I've had problems getting Velvia slides with good color, and yours really look well corrected.

Thank you Vilhelm

The slides were scanned with Nikon Coolscan 5000 ED, standard Nikon Softwae (I don´t like Vuescan of Silverfast), a little bit CS5 thereafter, nothing special. Normally it is not necessary to make any adjustments after scanning with the Nikon.

I have a Coolscan 4000 and when I was using the Nikon software i always enjoyed well corrected color results. Then Nikon dropped support and with Leopard/Snow Leopard the software quit working. With Vuescan I need IT8 target slides to properly profile the software for each type of film.

Frustrating Sad

Hi Vilhelm,

not sure whether the Nikon software for 4000 and 5000 is the same. I have Snow Leopard on my Imac and it works with the Nikon scan software, no problems.

Wow! Congrats Rolf! I don't have clue about AF lenses, but I found Nikon 20mm f2.8 AIS 24mm AIS, 85mm black AI or pre-AI 105mm f2.5 AIS best lenses in it's focal length.

Thank you Attila.

Ordered a Leitax bayonet for a Leica lens at first. Will be exciting to try it out.

Congratulations,Rolf.
I'm very impressed. Really nice pictures!
I consider to have Nikon F5 in near future.
May I ask you, please, how much you spend for your F5 copy?
