As expected, the new model was announced today. 18MP from the 7D, but auto focus system from the 50D (auto what?!), smaller plastic body, but retains the thumbwheel and higher ISO capability (above the 550D).

Well I'm not swapping my 40D for it, put it that way! But I'm sure the other consumers will love the 720p recording etc.

Bring on the 5D MkIII, I want the 5D MK II prices to come down Laughing

It sounds like a nice camera for MF lenses. The swiveling LCD would be nice for shooting with the camera overhead or at ground level. And the infrared flash slave is nice. But I wouldn't buy it to use with AF lenses because of the lack of AF microadjust. In some ways this is step backwards from the 50D. I guess Canon has replaced the 50D with two cameras, the 7D and the 60D. One is a step above and the other is a step below the 50D.

I think the 8-15mm f/4 Zoom Fisheye was a more interesting announcement form Canon than the 60D.

Both full-frame and circular fisheye. You choice...

Saw no price tags however...

I like the swiveling LCD...I hope it will become a standard feature for all the future xxxD, xxD or xD Smile

Canon press release

The Canon EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM lens is expected to be available in January of 2011 for an approximate retail price of $1,400.

Seems nice as all the other new lenses announced, but as always with Canon L-s it's a steep price...

Frankly, that was the biggest WTF announcement for me.

There have been fisheye zooms before; specifically the Pentax/Tokina 10-16mm. Those made sense because they were designed to be used on APS-C, and acted as a diagonal fisheye on the wide end (10mm) and from there you could zoom in to 16mm on the tele end, all the while getting super wideangle (albeit highly distorted) image.

This 8-15mm was designed for FF––I mean, it is an "L" lens, isn't it?––and it's a circular fisheye on one end and diagonal fisheye on the other end.

Uh, so, what's in between? I'll tell you. Between 8mm and 15mm you are going to get a super distorted image circle that never covers the entire frame, always leaving four dark corners.

I.e., unless there is some ultra specific thing you need to do... say you're only going to use it as a pano stiching tool, and for some reason, you want to have a perfect balance between image resolution and the smallest number of shots required to complete a 360˚ spherical panorama @ precisely 12mm focal length––you are going to use this lens *only* at the two ends, 8mm and 15mm.

The question of course is "why make it a zoom in the first place"??? It's insane. You go the trouble of designing something as complex as an 8-15mm circular/diagonal fisheye zoom, which has little value of it being a "zoom", except maybe to save a lens slot in your bag. Of course, you had to make it an L lens; how else could you justify such craftsmanship? The price will be a gazillion dollars.

Why not purchase two fixed focal length fisheyes? You can buy the Sigma 8mm circular fisheye (f3.5) AND the Sigma 15mm diagonal fisheye (f2.8!), and still have plenty of change in your pocket for the price of this lens. (The 8-15mm has a MSRP of 150,000 yen, currently about 1,780USD, and an expected street price of 127,000 yen, about 1,500USD)

The EF, being an L lens might have the upper hand optically, but it's also a zoom, while the two Sigmas are fixed focal length.

I think that lens would only be potentially interesting if lens tests show that optically, it destroys both of the Sigma lenses. Even then I don't know if I could forgive them for making a zoom lens that is, for 90% of everybody (that will use fisheyes, which is a very small niche to begin with), is only useful at the two ends of the zoom range. What a waste Razz

About the 8-15, Canon posted a video using this zoom (shot with a 5DMkII): http://cpn.canon-europe.com/content/news/zooming_fisheye.do

The best comment I've seen so far: rent it, try it a full day, give it back - you'll have plenty of fun and you'll never need it again Smile

I'm happy to see such a large articulating LCD display on this camera, as I really miss the same feature from my former PowerShot S3IS. Makes for a very welcome feature when shooting low to the ground.

However, using LiveView on a 40D is cumbersome and awkward, and perhaps just as ungainly with later Canon models. So until they make it an easier-to-use feature on their DSLR cameras, I probably won't be storming the stores to make a purchase any time soon.

Well, the newer Canon DSLR-s have a high res screen (900k dots and more). My 450D doesn't have it so I can't comment it, but I've read a couple of times from others that it helps significantly with LiveView focusing... Maybe someone here can tell their experience?
