I "need" a fast (i.e. 1.4) 50mm lens.
(Why carry one lens when you can cary 5 or more??)
I try to decide between a Zeiss 50mm Contax and alternatives like SMC Takumars.
The alternatives seem cheaper. Are they as good?
One thing I dislike about the Zeiss is its six-blade aperture.
How does it render OOF highlights?
Oh! I just realised this is the perfect flame-bait _________________ Νίκος • www.diafragma.gr

Bear in mind that the Takumar 50/1.4 doesn't work on Canon full frame without a shave
I love the Planar for it's 3D qualities and sharpness at f2.8, but the bokeh isn't for everyone _________________ Graham - Moderator

If you can afford it always pick-up Contax nothing else, just look Orio, Poilu etc
I have good experience with Olympus OM 1.4 too , cheap as Takumar. Nikon AIS 1.4 another one I think better than Oly or Tak. _________________ -------------------------------

Leica Summilux 1.4/50mm near #3.000.000 and you will forget the rest...
A Planar 1.4/50mm is also a good choice..
If you look for a real fast one.. take a converted Canon FD 1.2/55mm SSC..
@1.4 its a great oponent to the Summilux..
...
but if you look for a cheap one... take the Olympus above #serial 1.100.000
or a SMC - M Pentax..
Cheers

Bah - too late. I was going to suggest an EBC Fujinon, if you could have lived with 55m instead of 50mm and f1.8 instead of f1.4
