As i left my AF Tokina AT-X 5.6/400mm at home, this simply had to become my lucky day.
For cases of emergency i had the Dynax 5D with the Sigma 8/600mm mirror to help me out. It seems it díd help me out

Beautiful shot! The picture looks like it were shot in film and in the 70's or so - interesting and very nice! You might also want to try out what alternative versions with more contrast and colours woould look like, though I do like the retro look. |

Huh. Well, I just learned something. I never realized that "hawks" are also known as "buzzards." To me, a buzzard has always been one of these animals:
Years ago, I owned a Sigma 600mm in Canon FD mount, and sold it when I moved over to Nikon. I've always kinda wanted to replace that lens with one in Nikon mount, but never have yet. I took many outstanding pics with mine, and it would seem that you've been able to do the same with yours. It seems that many others are aware of the quality of this lens, though, cuz it routinely sells on eBay for rather large sums, especially when in one of the more usable mounts for DSLRs.
I don't mind the OOF donuts that many people complain about with mirror lenses. The donuts in yours, being soft, work rather well, I think. _________________ Michael

You could be right about copy variants. Heck I've run into them with Canon EF lenses, I reckon they can happen with old Sigma mirrors. But I still recall thinking, shortly after I bought my Sigma, that it might not have been very good -- until I learned how to use it. If focus wasn't absolutely nailed, images came out looking rather soft. And given its narrow depth of field, focus could be a challenge. And of course, at 600mm, camera shake was always a problem to watch out for.
Some dupes of some old slides I took with my Sigma 600. I also included some 100% crops. You need to bear in mind this is film, okay? So the 100% crops are grainy.

Wow
Nice proof of what a mirrorlens can produce with the right photographer behind it. _________________
