Iceland - Pentax 6x7

I spent a week in Iceland in early May, amid the chaos caused by the Eyjafjallajökull eruption. I drove around Route 1, a ring-road that circles the entire island. It is a truly extraordinary country, every day threw up contrasting landscapes and conditions. If you have any interest in landscape photography get yourself to the land of fire and ice!

I took my Pentax 6x7 because I didn't think grand vistas are really suited to a square-format camera. Many of my photos were taken using a graduated neutral-density filter which came in very handy.

I took an unusually large number of photographs, which is frankly unsurprising given all the photo opportunities. As such I haven't even managed to scan all of my film, but here are few that I have uploaded. Please click on the images to access larger versions.

Iceland + P 6x7 I knew we'd see something special, and indeed these are special. If I must pick, 2 and 3 just edge out the others for me.

I look forward to seeing many more

All shots were taken using the 105mm f/2.4. A wonderful lens. Smile

What a country. Very nice images, I would like to see more!

Iceland is on my list, since a long time.
How did you manage the vacations, car rental, food supply, if I may ask?
So many questions... Smile

I organised everything myself. I rented a car from Kelflavík airport and drove clock-wise from Reykjavík. I stayed in a different place every night, mostly at farms. It was a great way to see as much of the country in a short space of time, while saving money. Plus, the breakfasts at the farms were delicious! Freshly smoked trout, lamb pâté, eggs and ginger cake.

I am already planning a trip back to Iceland. Possibly this winter. Razz

Wow! Breathtaking! That very last photo almost looks like an HDR image.

What did you use to scan your negs/slides?

PostPosted: Sat Jul 24, 2010 8:42 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

Yes I think I need to edit it slightly. The problem, as with all slides, is that the scanned image never looks as good, so I need to edit it in photoshop, particularly to enhance the dynamic range. I use an Epson 4990 and I have used it for over 5 years now.

The farm house on the slide is clear and bright, but in the scan it's far too dark.

Fantastic!

I have a 4990 also. I've been satisfied with the job it does on 120. Not so much, 35mm.

Your Epson Scan software has controls that should allow you to brighten up the image a fair amount before scanning. Have you tried this yet? Still, I find that I do like the brooding and almost sinister quality you achieved with the old farm house.

3 and 4 in the first set, and the last two in the 2nd are my faves, but all
are representative of the fine work you do!
