Where have you got these ?

Hi,

Well, yes - sort of.

A few months ago I bought (as part of a lot) what I thought was a set of M42 extension tubes. When they arrived, I was surprised to discover that they were 40mm screw thread. I actually posted to ask about them, and the kind folks here helped me determine that they were the "middle" rings from a set of Exakta extension tubes - lacking the lens and camera fittings.

As it happens, I have a few 40mm screw thread lenses. Two of them are for the original Praktiflex: a Meyer Helioplan and a 5cm/3.5 Zeiss Jena Tessar. The others are Tominon lenses originally intended for the Polaroid MP-4 camera. The thread pitch is not exactly the same as that of the Exakta rings, but they screw in well enough to be secure.

I spent a while figuring out how to turn one of the Exakta rings into a 40mm "adapter." I wanted, if possible, to test out the setup before committing myself to any non-reversible configuration. I wound up taking an idle M42 T-mount adapter - the first-generation model that used three screws to attach to a groove in the end of the lens, rather than screwing onto a threaded end (if I remember correctly, the T-adapter was borrowed from an old Kopil Bellowscope). I positioned the thinnest of the Exakta rings inside the T-adapter and retightened the three screws to hold it in place. The hardest part of the operation was keeping the Exakta ring flat while tightening the screws so as to hold it in the center of the T-adapter.

The result is secure enough to hold the Praktiflex lenses and the Tominon lenses in place (it helps that they're all small and lightweight), allowing me to mount the lenses to my M42 bellows (or an M42 helicoid extension tube). It's a macro setup, of course, but the Praktiflex lenses are suitable only for closeup work on an M42 camera in any case (the Praktiflex M40 and Praktica M42 registers are different, even though there are several online references that suggest they're identical). And the Tominons were purchased strictly for their macro capabilities.

I haven't had the opportunity to conduct a thorough test, but the results so far are encouraging. I'm happy with the adapter as it is; if I decide to use it more seriously, I'll consider epoxying the Exakta ring in place.

In the meantime, I picked up, very cheaply, another set of Exakta rings that included the bayonet lens-mount fitting, as shown in your post. I'm considering attaching that fitting to another M42 T-adapter, to give me the ability to use Exakta lenses for macro work as well. That ought to work, for example, for the short-mount Schacht 50mm Exakta macro lens, or the Topcon 30/3.5 macro (with the proper Topcon-to-RMS adapter, as originally supplied with that lens). I don't own either of those, or any other Exakta lenses, at the moment, so this second project hasn't been a priority.

I know this is all hard to envision without photographs, so I'll try to take a couple of quick snaps of the homemade M40 adapter.

Cheers,

Jon

I got these from an online camera store in the US called Jim's Camera. I bought them just to see if they come in handy in converting Exakta mounts. Any suggesstions? can we turn your Fujinon EBC 135mm to Exakta? Very Happy

Jon,

Wow looks like you have some potential converts there- would be swell to see some sample photos when you're done. Thanks for sharing your project.

The silver adapter on the first two images has a thread mount that is 44mm and after doing some research -it "seems" it may have come of bellows .

Looks "exaktly" like this

The black one has a threaded mount that measures 39/40mm.

Hasta la bamba

Hi,

Very interesting!

So far as I know - and bear in mind that I didn't know very much about Exakta extension tubes until the kind folks here helped me out - the ~40mm thread is correct for the "middle" tubes. Exakta tube sets have separate bayonet fittings for lens and camera; these screw into the tubes at either end. Your black adapter looks like the lens-end fitting. (For Exakta lenses that used the side-arm aperture actuator, there was also a sort of separate mechanical linkage, attached to the tubes, that transmitted the shutter release pressure.)

But a 44mm measurement makes me think "Miranda." Mirandas had both an inner 44mm screw thread and an outer bayonet fitting (I hope I've got that right; I'm working from memory there).

I sometimes think about creating some sort of crazy adapter with a male M42 end and a female 44mm end; it wouldn't help much for Miranda lenses (except, again, for macro work), but I believe there were some medium-format lenses (Kalimar/Fujita, maybe?) that used a 44mm thread mount. It would be fun to try to adapt those.

I've bought a few things from Jim's over the years; I've always been pleased with my experiences.

Cheers,

Jon

How make adapter to Travennar Macro 50mm 2.8 from Exakta (RTL1000) ? Butter? Smile

What camera are you going to mount it on? They sell adapters to a few cameras, and adaptation possibilities are there depending on mount design of your lens. I am not familiar with the lens you have. Maybe you can post pictures of the lens.

I hope someone can give you more insight.

I will use in Nikon D100

Hi sorry for the late follow up- Here is link for the adapter used for NikonD100, I see selling at ebay.

Click here to see on Ebay

You might be able to find it closer to you. My concern however is if the Travennar Macro 50mm 2.8 from Exakta (RTL1000) has a auto aperture link arm that sticks out, and if it will obstruct the operation of the lens-once mounted on your Nikon.

The biggest factor is I am not familiar with Nikons, so I am not in a position to tell you how the M42 adapters work with the different Nikons.

Must have cost you an arm and a leg- those can't be cheap- however "viniciuspedrozo" I think is looking for an adapter for a lens of the Exakta RTL1000 flavor.

Nikon cameras are too "thick" to accept Exakta lenses. No infinity will be possible.

No, it came as a "freebie" addition to an old nikon lens Smile Smile

Quite right, Klaus, no infinity, but I use it to adapt an exakta mount Novoflex bellows to my D200/D70.

viniciuspedrozo:

Please ignore my link that I wrongly gave you. Thats for a M42 to Nikon adapter.

exaklaus and patrickh are both right on the Exakta adapter they mention before my post. I am glad they came to the rescue here.

Cheers
