Are you looking for particular lens among Canon 'L' masters?

Hi trifox,
Yes, a grotty Canon FD "L". Not joking, one with a big scratch(es) across the front element perhaps, or one which has been battered and bruised through a long life. One which someone doesn't really want and will therefore be cheap enough to convert with no pain if it all goes wrong.
I can't afford a good one because, as you say, they are well regarded. But lenses do get damaged or are unappealing because of mis-care. So if anyone has one like that, I'd like to buy it and attempt to convert it. |

You might want to also include the old breechlock SSC Asphericals on your list. They aren't "L" but they're at least as good.
Here's a grotty 85/1.2 SSC Aspherical from Attila's favorite seller, for actually a pretty good price:

Definitely "grotty." _________________ Michael

this is one is believed to be better than his successor FD 85 f1.2 L because of this:
- it has ASPH element whereas the FD 85 f1.2 L has 'only' APSH surface
- it has 9 blades whereas the FD 85 f1.2 has 8 blades
well, poor lens on this auction !! but it might be good anyway.

FD 50/1.4 is very good, but has big problems with the mirror on 5Dmk1/2. Only a few of the more interesting FD lenses can be used without big mirror shaving. Maybe the 50L works - if you want to know do a search on Fredmiranda (maybe esp. archives from 2008/9), lot's of threads about it there. |

Thanks for taking the trouble to let me know. Sounds like an excellent price, but if there are major issues with the mirror on my 5D, a conversion wouldn't alter that. I'll check it out on FredMiranda (thanks for the tip Ahamb). Out of interest, what would be the postage between Indonesia and UK do you think?

Hi all,
I now need to apologise to everyone in this forum and the marketplace.
I had no real idea how valuable these "L" series (and other good and respected lenses) are, in whatever mount and whatever condition. Having researched a bit more, chatted to one or two people, and had a good look at the used price guide on this site, I now realise that they are waaaayyyyy over my budget.
I should have done this research before my OP and I apologise for not doing so. I mean no disrespect to those who already knew what I didn't, but should have. Thank you all for helping.

No worries, Martyn. It's all part of the entertainment here at the big MF
I think you'll find that even the aftermarket lenses with low-dispersion glass or APO designs tend to sell for a bit of a premium: Sigma APO, Tokina AT-X SD, and Tamron SP LD. However, it is at least a bit more likely to run across a deal on a premium lens made by one of these mfrs that a Canon L or a Nikon ED. _________________ Michael
