i recently tracked this lens on ebay, and while waiting for that auction to end i searched for info on this lens. what i found got me a bit puzzled

http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/nikon/nikkoresources/special/250medical.htm

especially underlined part here:

"This old Medical-Nikkor has a self-compensating design, eliminating all bothersome calculations for setting the diaphragm in relation to film speed and reproduction ratio. All that is required of the photographer is to set the lens for the ASA speed of the film used, attach the auxiliary lens or lenses in accordance with the desired magnification ratio, focus by moving the camera toward or away from the subject and release the shutter. It was also one of the first batch of Nikon auto thyristors that provide automatic flash exposure. Its primary objective was to facilitate convenience in lens handling, permitting deliveries of high quality images of optimum exposure even if it was handled by someone that has little photographic knowledge. The was made possible with the incorporation of an automatic lens diaphragm stops down to correct aperture at the moment of exposure.

does it mean it's fully automatic? can it be manually stopped?

If there were no aperture ring, like the very modern G lenses, from Nikon, then it would not be possible to adjust the aperture manually.

As there is an aperture ring, marked nicely to f.45 indeed, it is clearly possible to manually adjust exposure.

There must be a mechanism for this auto feature to operate therefore?

I am not an expert in Nikon gear.

It is often possible to compensate by adjusting the iso setting, but in those days, the iso might not go to 800ASA equivalent! That would be limited. Buy the thing, you can probably flog it at a profit to an expert! It seems a high quality device, but you be the guide as to condition etc.

The payment for this advice is a reply in due copurse and a photo or two!
