Hi Folks,

I trying to get my friend into using MF lenses with his Canon 40D. So I am looking for a decent MF f1.4 lens. Anyone got one spare that is reasonably sharp wide at f1,4 for sale?

Hopefully not too expensive - meaning I don't think he will fork out for a Leica or Zeiss lens. If going down that route, then he will go for an USM EOS f1.4 instead.

Thanks,
Si...

Hi.

I'll recommend a 1.4 Zeiss, or a Minolta Rokkor, cheaper, but good. otherwise a 1.8 M42 lens will do.

AS for the EF Canon in 1.4 version, it's great lens, i had it, but AF is not for me i think, it's just too easy Razz

besides there's no possibility to mf like with a real "old" mf lens, so i'm selling it

Hi,
I'd redo my Canon FD 50/1.4 SSC to the EOS, if you pay 100 eur for this lens

Hi Audris,

Do you know if this converted FD lens would be suitable for a full frame camera like 5D MkII?

Hi,
high probability, that is not infinite on the 5d.
on the 40d should be okay

Hi,
I see. That's a pity. As my friend will definitely ugrade at some stage to 5D MKII.

Thanks for your offer anyway.

I'm in the midst of converting a batch of Minolta Rokkor 50mm f1.4 and 58/1.4 to EF mount. These will need the mirror shaved on a 5D to clear properly. PM me (or email is even better) if you want to discuss.

cheers,

John

I’d like to add: What are the easiest mounts to convert? I only have experience with Olympus OM to EOS, C/Y (Contax/Yashica), and MD (Minolta Rokkor 58/1.4) experience and I must say the easiest of those 3 were the Oly conversions…cheap converter w/o any need to do anything with the original mount. The C/Y on a Kiron 24/2 that I have worked almost the same as the Oly but the metal DOF preview level that stuck way out actually shaved some plastic off the inside of my 5DMK2 mirror box. Last the Rokkor was the least favorable for ease of conversion. Not only did I have to remove the original mount, I had to spend $$ on a custom made adapter and then I had to adjust infinity such that when the focus ring is sitting at infinity it’s actually about 15ft (adjusted manually so the rear of the lens doesn’t hit the 5DMK2 mirror).

So in general what do those searching for older MF lenses for Canon EOS EF mount look for?

John,

Any thoughts on grinding the rear element housing on the Rokkor 58/1.4 as I mention here: http://forum.mflenses.com/viewtopic.php?p=1037051#1037051

I’m interested in the 50/1.4...can you detail your conversion?

Thanks,
Roy

Olympus, Nikon, Leica R, M42 and Contax C/Y work well on Canon EF with easy to find adapters and no lens modification is usually necessary. Rollei and Exakta may have problems with infinity or mirror clearance on full frame cameras like 5D. Pentax, Minolta, Contax N and Canon FD will require lens modification. Leica M and other rangefinder systems cannot be converted.

I think this one at infinity hits the mirror.

Folks thanks for all your offers. In the end I could not tempt my friend into the "Dark" side Twisted Evil of using "MF" lenses Shocked and he went for a Sigma 50mm f1.4 instead. Confused

Cheers again!
