Hello fellow MF enthusiasts...
I've been thinking of getting an MF 300mm lens to couple with a TC and the PENTACON 4/300mm has come-up as an option. And I was wondering if anyone knew whether or not this lens had coatings or... how it compared to the MC CJZ Sonnar 4/300?
Thanks in advance for your help with this.

Don´t know about coatings.
Bought one of this lenses recently. Very heavy and a lot of glass. Below a link to some test shots I made with 450D. Never used the lens since that time.

Any comment on CA and/or flaring?
I looked at your images(very nice btw), but I was not able to find original sized ones to pixel peep with. |

The latter versions of the lens had multi-coating and were marked MC.
A comparison to various old and modern 300mm lens....http://www.pbase.com/sparky14/300mm_lens_test
The lens is a bit soft wide open and lacking contrast as seen in the pix below, stopping down to f8 or f11 the images are considerably sharper.
and a few I've taken with the lens....100% crops of 100% crops
and a few taken this week...100% crops
another 100% crop of a 100% crop

hi!
I have same petacon model, not 300mm but 200mm f4 ...with green text...
I think that is not multicoated. Have a lot of blue fringing when is under strong light!
I am not experienced but this is what I see in my first shot! _________________ if you like photography, maybe you should visit my site!

Hello
There were two different versions of the Pentacon 200/4 - there was the version with a preset aperture and lots of aperture blades (these were made in zebra styling and black with green text and black with red text) and an "auto" model which had 6 blades. The newer 6-bladed version is a bit sharper with less CA (in my experience), while the older model might have better bokeh. _________________ Graham - Moderator

Yours looks like the version after the zebra version and before the later multi-coated auto and electric versions.
