Today we celebrated 65 years of liberation from WWII here in my town, Apeldoorn. 65 years ago we got liberated by the Canadians and are ofcourse still grateful! For many years there are street parades annually where the canadian war veterans return to this town and parade through town, like they did when they just liberated this town. Including the vehicles of that time and marching bands.
It is always quite a festivity and it attracts huge crowds. It is also very nice seeing those war veterans still around and you can truly see them enjoy the moments. Sadly this year was the last parade, as the veterans are getting very old.
Anyhow, with no further delays, here are some pickings.
Sorry for the amount of photos! I just couldn't pick.

4. The person on the right isn't sharp, however I just love the look of joy on their faces.
5. This Veteran is holding a sign that says "Friends Forever" in Dutch.

12. Not a veteran, I just loved the appearance of this guy! Silver headphones that nearly dissapear in his hair/beard! I believe this guy was part of a Canadian broadcasting service.

Very nice series JWH. It's wonderful to see the Canadian veterans making the long journey every year to keep up the special friendship with the people of Holland. I'm sad to hear this is the last time, but I'm sure the friendship is strong enough to carry on for generations more.
There are also some pictures of Apeldoorn on the Toronto Sun website:
http://www.torontosun.com/news/canada/2010/05/09/13884306.html
Are you in any of them?
Do you know who was the band in your photograph? It looks very much like the British Royal Marines, but maybe the Canadians have a similar uniform. _________________ Peter - Moderator |

The photos will be sent to the committee that held this event and they will do the rest.

At the end of the street parade, there was a festival held in a large stadium which is a tradition they want to keep annually. So i'm sure this will grow on. One of the veterans transferred the torch of friendship to a new and young ambassador of freedom&friendhip. Which was a rather famous artist from our town, Waylon.
Nice seeing the photo's in the torontosun. However I'm not in any of those, but hey, that's not odd seeing the amount of people that were there. These photo's were taken closer to the start of the parade, while I was more halfway. I liked my location more because of the green backdrop of the trees from the 'Oranje Park'.
I don't know about the bands. There were 22 of them. They are all listed on this page: National Street Parade and 1st National Liberation Festival. |
