I just spotted -- and reserved -- a Distagon 28/2.8 T* at a local store. At 110€ the price seemed attractive, and by reading around it looks like one of the best 28mm around.

It has a few scuff marks but the store has a great reputation, and the lens comes with its case and a 2yr warranty. I am very ignorant about Contax lenses, so I'd like a check on this price. I will probably convert it with a Leitax kit, or pass it along to someone on this forum if it's a good deal.

A couple of pics of the lens

At that price, if it's operationally good, bite his arm off to get it. My D28MM cost GBP250 about five years ago. I wouldn't worry about it being an AE model, as few people use Program/Tv modes, and that's the only real difference.

Usually a 2yrs warranty from this store (it sells mainly high end Leica gear) means it's operationally great, not just good. When there's something even a little off like slightly stiff focusing, they sell without a warranty.

And no need to bite anybody's arm off, I already reserved the lens and only have to go pick it up (and pay it, of course). Smile

Stop wasting time writing here, get round to the store and buy it! Someone might beat you to it!

You are what is known here in the UK as a jammy beggar. That really is a good price, and the D28 is a superb lens. It was my first Distagon, and optically one of the very best in the Zeiss line.

Go and buy.
I have got the D28 AE and you will love it. At 5.6 even the borders are sharp. One of the lenses I will not let go.

He's gone quiet. I figure he's off down to the shop with his wallet.

Lol no, not yet. I only got an email confermation from the store, saying the lens is mine and asking when I'll go pick it up. No need to hurry. Smile

It's not an MM though, so may not be suitable for a Leitax conversion?

Great price certainly.

Great price, yes. I paid $230 for mine. Late MMJ version, everything perfect except some (OK, quite some) dust inside that bothered the seller. When the lens showed up, the dust appeared to be just a few blotches of loose particles - not a thin film of dust that could potentially affect contrast.

What's the difference between MM and "other" models?

If it's not ok for a Leitax conversion I might sell it here at cost.

MM models have a small lug on the mount that engages with later Contax SLR mounts to tell the camera that the lens is capable of Multi-Mode operation (shutter priority and program in addition to the normal aperture priority). The Leitax web site says that the conversion is for MM models, not AE, though there are conversion kits for one Planar and one Sonnar.

Prepare to have your own arm bitten off.

LOL.

I asked the Leotax guy, and he says a conversion is not possible. I have two options: a) give it to someone on this forum at cost; b) sell it on ebay at a profit. Well, there's also a third one: c) trade it for something of equivalent value here.

I' ll do c), if nothing happens I'll go ahead with a). As a last resort I'll put it on ebay.

There is another option...Convert the lens to a usable mount yourself. I converted my AE model to Sigma SA mount and its a fully reversable conversion. I just removed the C/Y mounting plate and before I put it away somewhere safe, then I machined up a custom bezel ring on my lathe which holds the SA mounting plate onto the lens and keeps any dust out.

I don't trust myself with a conversion, especially on a good lens such as this. And I don't have a lathe, even though I often wish I had...
