I can't believe the speed of having a new computer. My old one
was certainly up to most tasks, but even with 2GB of memory, had
a hard time handling folders with a lot of files. Also, slow with
Photoshop Elements.
I purchased a "new" (actually a few years old technology) computer
with dual-processors and a good video card, 4GB memory, etc. This
was the best $289 I've spent in a while. Purchased it through the
auction site, from a fantastic seller named gtoeddie. _________________

Yes, mo...it's nice to just watch how FAST it rips through searches
for files, and other such stuff. I'm always in awe of how the technology
advances so quickly, and we get the benefit of lower prices from "old"
technology that's really almost new in its way.
I opened a scanned medium format transparency in about 3 seconds,
compared to over a minute with the older computer. I use the old computer
now, for an extra backup and for fun programs that won't run on the
Windows Vista that is present on this computer.
Mo, I have been wondering - how have you been doing with the drought
in your area? Is it pretty bad, or have you escaped the worst of the dry
weather? _________________

Wow, good deal! Congrats!
I think better folder/search/open speed is due to faster hard driving. The 4GB RAM will certainly help with PP the large medium format scan files! _________________ ☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮ like attracts like! ☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮

I am not on a farm but in a rural town. There has been suffering on the farms around here because of the drought but this year as far as I know things are looking up although it now looks like the locusts could be gearing up for a big season.
The recent rains up in Queensland have caused a massive inland flow of water that moves down the river systems to some of the driest areas of inland NSW/Queensland/Sth Australia. It's a rolling flood which is amazing to see on the news reports.I don't know if the drought is fully over we can only hope. Thanks for asking.

Gaaaahh!
I really hope you aren't having problems with Vista, Larry.
Windows 7 is what everyone agrees Vista should have been in the first place,
and my limited testing leads me to agree.
Nice price you paid, though. _________________ Craig

Congratulations on your new arrival!
People vastly underestimate the importance of a fast graphics card, and plenty of RAM both on the card and on the mainboard!
People blather on about .25 of a MHz difference in processor speed when RAM makes far more of an impact on performance! _________________ Lenses and cameras:

I know the feeling - I replaced my old Mobile Sempron-laptop with a brand new i3-based one a couple of months ago. The difference is just massive - developing images is now almost pleasant |

Congratulations on the new PC Laurence. My good lady bought me a new one for Xmas but I had to build it myself. We even got ourselves a legal free copy of Windows 7. They were nice enough to send us a copy for the release party thing they did as a release promotion. |

Congrats on your new PC. Just a small advice to make this computer even faster: choose setting for 'Best Performance' rather than 'Best Appearance' which is generally default for all window system. You can access this feature at:
Control Panel\System and Maintenance\System\Advance system properties
Windows spend a lot to maintain its so called 'Appearance' but it can take more than half of your computer memory. |

Thanks all! Yes, I have optimized all settings to get rid of the crap that
slows things down, including Best Performance.
Regarding the Vista program I have, it's been running very smoothly, and
accepts each of my three old programs that are important to me
(Topo, Photoshop Elements 7, Epson Scan). I was having trouble
with things like You Tube and other Flash-oriented programs, until
I downloaded the latest Vista updates. Voila! All is well!
I keep my computer REALLY clean and away from crapware; just the
basic things I need, and so far Vista is fine.
I hope it stays well, and that Vista continues to work just fine for
my limited amount of needed programs. Everything is so FAST! _________________
