Hi All,
A quick Tamron question, if I may. I recently ran across a sale listing for an Adaptall-2 adapter described as being for "Fujica Screwmount." Does anyone have any experience with this specific Tamron adapter? I assume that it's a conventional M42, with some or all of the features proprietary to the Fuji version of the M42 mount (most problematically, the protruding aperture-ring lug). I'm wondering whether it could readily be modified (like EBC Fujinon lenses themselves) for use on non-Fuji bodies.
Thanks!

I have one and it works interchangeably with any other M42 adaptall. Hasn't caused any mounting issues on various cameras either. But yes, there's some Fuji specific bits
Note however that none of the adaptalls have an A/M switch, on the theory that you should just get the correct camera specific adapter instead of going M42 adaptall -> M42/camera adapter. _________________ -Jussi

Thank you for the kind replies!
In perfect candor, I was interested in this adapter as a less-costly alternative to a "standard" (Pentax) Adaptall-2 M42 model, for use on my Pentax K20D with flanged M42->K adapter fitted (addressing the lack of an A/M switch). The one I encountered was listed at a price significantly lower than the prices I typically see for the Pentax version, and I was wondering if it had quirks that might make it a poor substitute for its Pentax sibling.
Sounds like the Fujica model is worth a try.
Again - many thanks.
Cheers,

There's a bit on the mount that you may want to shave off. Other than that it's the same. I left my bit unshaved ( ) and it bore a circle into my M42 adapter eventually _________________ Graham - Moderator

Thank you! I have a feeling I'll be doing some minor surgery once the adapter arrives.

The flange on M42-camera adapters, depending on the lens, sometimes does not press the pin far enough in to close the diaphragm to the f/# marked on the lens. Some lenses cannot be fully screwed into the flanged adapter without bending the pin. ymmv. The first problem is easily solved with a shim; the second is not so easy. _________________ ☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮ like attracts like! ☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮

Hi,
I have encountered a few auto-only M42 lenses with which my flanged adapter does not fully cooperate - I have the adapter offered by Alex, and I've been more than pleased with it - but that has been a minor inconvenience. In most such cases, the problem is that the lens will stop down to, say, f8 or f11, but no further. Given that I'm using a DSLR, the unavailability of f16 or f22 with respect to a handful of lenses has not so far been an issue.
(Probably a worthwhile subject for a separate thread: auto-only lenses that may not stop down all the way when using a flanged adapter.)
As for this specific Adaptall adapter...that remains to be seen.
Cheers,
Jon |

Hi Jon
SP and Adaptall 2 lenses are all auto only. However, you can shove a bit of paper/card inside the M42 Adaptall mount to force the lenses into manual stop down _________________ Graham - Moderator

I am not sure at what price this Fujica Adaptall adapter is offered.
I would think it would be too much effort to mod it, unless you like modding.
There are very usable M42-Tamron Adaptall adapters available from China at reasonable prices. _________________ No longer member , please don't try to contact to him |

Thanks, everyone. This has been a very helpful discussion, for several reasons. It has prompted me to take a new, more careful look at the way my Adaptall-2 lenses (currently an SP 35~80, an SP 90/2.5 and an SP 17/3.5), fitted with M42 adapters, are working with my flanged M42->PK adapter.
As I had noticed previously, the flanged adapter is definitely working to keep the aperture pin depressed throughout the range of f-stops (well, not all the way to f32, but that's OK with me). However, it doesn't seem that the lenses are fully screwing into the adapter (I assume this is the behavior you noted, siriusdogstar - thank you). The phenomenon seems similar to the one you encounter when screwing on one of the early Vivitar Series 1 M42 lenses: there's a sort of "stop" near the end. With the Vivitars, however, it's possible to turn the lens beyond that stop and screw it all the way in; with the Tamrons, the stop is a dead stop.
This suggests, of course, that one would probably lose infinity focus (I didn't have time to check on that). But in any case, the lens/camera attachment is not secure enough for confident use.
So I think I'll abandon the Fujica option, and switch my Adaptall-2 lenses, across the board, to a K-mount adapter. Thankfully, I've got one of those on hand, and I may add another.
Thanks again for all the excellent advice!
Cheers,
Jon |
