In my quest for my "perfect" 50mm, I recently got the Nikkor SC 50/1.4 rawhead was seling here in the marketplace. I got it last night, and after a few tries (the internal light baffle blocks the mirror in all positions but one) I managed to mount it on my Pentax *istD.

I brought it to the park today and took a few shots, I'm a bit lazy today so I'll post just one, shot I think at f2 (it might show better had I some pp skills). I think this will be the perfect fast 50mm for me: I love its colors, its sort of darkish, subdued rendering, and it's sharp even wide open.

That's a wonderful shot!
And I fully agree. I also have this lens and I think it's a fantastic one.
My No.3 of my 50mm lenses*. I consider it even a bit "better" than the Zuiko 1.4/50 and the Takumar 1.4/50 - and this means a lot!

*(1. Summicron 50 \ 2. Nikkor-S.C 1.2/55 \ 3. Nikkor-S.C 1.4/50)

That is a wonderful shot. The lense seems to be a winner.

I don't know if you find the perfect 50mm but you have the most beautiful daughter, great portrait

Thanks all for the compliments, but a great subject and good lens require little more than pushing the button to get a nice picture.

Carsten, I understand how this is the #3 lens in your personal 50mm rankings: it took me a couple of hours to love it. Now I understand why it's considered a classic.

The problem is, I almost want to get a Nikon D40 to use Nikon glass, including my two pre-AI lenses. Which will interfere with my plan of getting a 5D. Smile

This Nikkor works great on my 5D. So, there is no need to get a D40 which will not meter anyway. Wink

I'm glad you're liking the lens Smile I wouldn't have let it go if it weren't for the fact that with a Zuiko 50/1.2 on hand, it just never got mounted on my 5D Mk II. And for my K-7, I have the FA 50/1.4, Color-Ultron 50/1.8, Ultron 50/1.8, Helios-44 58/2.... plenty to keep me from getting radical with the F mount to use the Nikkor with my K-7.

And since I'm not a collector (despite my fairly long list of gear), I wasn't going to just let a hunk of good glass lying around. Cheers!

That's exactly the dilemma I am in. I have several really good lenses that hardly see any use, because there are some even better ones in my collection.
I have sold many of those already, but ATM cannot convince myself to sell some more. Embarassed

After shooting a bit more with the Nikkor 50/1.4, I've found out that its contrast is a bit on the low side. Which is not always a bad thing, and can be "fixed" easily in pp.

One more shot from yesterday, 200 iso 1/25 handheld at f1.4.

Great first results from what is - to my mind anyway - a truly great lens. I bought one because I'd seen the impressive images from other owners here, and am totally crazy about it. As to where I'd rate it, I don't honestly know, but what I do know is that it blows me away every time I use it - something I know I can't say for many of my other 50s...

I was in Florence yesterday to speak at a conference -- and btw the new fast train rocks, 1:40min from Milan to Florence where 6 months ago it took 3 hours -- and to travel light I only brought the Nikkor 50/1.4. I took a few shots at the conference, where lighting conditions were awful, and without a flash having 1.4 saved the day: pictures are in no way sharp and have quite a bit of CA due to the great light difference between the screen and the dark hall, but they are perfectly usable.

I also managed to fire off a single quick shot to the Florence duomo, as it was like 50mt. from the hotel where the conference was held. I totally suck at photographing inanimate objects and especially architecture (despite having a degree in Architecture, lol), but looking at the picture I am impressed once again: I thought I loved ultra-sharp lenses, but using the Nikkor I have fallen in love with its smoothness, soft contrast, and colors which I find better than the raw sharpness in other lenses I have.

Shot at f8, processed in Pentax Laboratory with no curves and no changes to the in-camera settings (+1 contrast, +1 sharpness), scaling for the web does no justice to the lens

100% crop, no sharpening

Impressive results! Continue posting like this, you're gonna make me regret I let it go Laughing

I guess the soft contrast is a product of the S.C, but I'm glad again you're liking it Smile
