Hi,

I own a AF minolta 50/1.7 and want to go fast in this range but AF 50/1.4 is little pricey for me so I am thinking about to go for Minolta MC 58/1.4 and then convert it to A mount.

Does any has experience with this lens? I have good things about it but I just want to know if it worth the trouble. Minolta 58/1.2 certainly does but it is way way more expensive !

Well I have this lens and am not impressed as being F1.4 would have thought it would be Minolta's best effort........nothing basically wrong with it other than flare prone, but it comes under my selection of lenses e.g auto-tak 55mm f1.8 where you have to "work at it", to get sharp results......in this shot even using Photoshop I cannot get a razor sharp image, maybe I have a bad copy? or you might think this shot is good enough, well a £3 Helios 44m and most of my other nifty fifty's are sharper.

S-M-C F/1,4 is a great 50 mm. In facts, it's my favorite ones.

About the minolta 1,4/58 here in the forum you can find a lot of information, and the concept moves around that the lens is good but not spectacular. I watched some pics taken with the minolta lens at F/1,4-2 but I don't remember ones taken with F/4 to 11. Let see if anyone can post them.

Rino.

Well I can't remember seeing a shoot out between nifty fifty F1.4s, but someone might have a link. But maybe the Minolta 58mm f1.4 works better on a digital camera as a few lenses praised by digital guys seem ordinary to me.....using film.

I have no experience with the 58mm, but do have experience with Rokkor 50mm f/1.4, Rokkor 50mm f/1.7, and Minolta 50mm f/1.7 AF. Unfortunately, I have not yet been able to use my Rokkors on digital. The mount is a bit tricky to convert and I'm still not sure I will be able to. At this point I only want to convert the Rokkors for sentimental reasons as they have been with me since the 70s and performed very well with film. The Minolta AF lens is highly regarded, but my recent tests comparing it to Mamiya and Helios indicates it's not as sharp. It is very soft at wide open - improves rapidly - and does well in its sweet spot as this picture might indicate:

I suspect the old Rokkors may be sharper. However, when you consider the time and/or expense of converting the Minolta lenses to A-mount, it probably makes no sense unless you have an emotional attachment like I do. There are some wonderful M42 lenses that can be had relatively cheap that will require noting more than an adapter, which is something you would have to purchase anyway when doing a mount conversion. I personally prefer the chipped adapters when using my A200 as they allow for focus confirm, aperture mode exposure, and image stability function.

Check out the thread on 50-55mm lenses; there are many good recommendations. Aside from the very inexpensive Helios 44-2 pre-set, I very much like my M42 Mamiya 50mm f/1.4. This Mamiya picture is from my A200 and cropped 50%:

***I suspect the old Rokkors may be sharper***

erm Well I've read the general opinion is that the Minolta 50mm f1.4 is sharper than the older 58mm f1.4.
