Thank you Attila. It seems the Helios 44-M handles haze/veiling better than my previously owned 44-2. I ordered a Helios 44M-7 MC from ebay yesterday because I heard it's the best (and last?) of the Helios 44s. I saw some Flickr photos taken with it and it does seem impressive.

These old lenses are really awesome, aren't they?
